Our home was one mile north of the Ben Dearinger home and eight miles west of Kokomo. Father left Kentucky June 9, 1859 Worked that summer in Rush Co. In the fall he went to Howard County: bought the little farm north of uncle Ben's. went back to Rush Co. Married Sarah Elizabeth Dearinger on Dec. 25, 1859. Amanda A. myself, and Sonora were born on the little farm north of uncle Ben's. Sonora Died in March 1865. I remember taking my Sunday clothes to Uncle for him to dress me. That must have been at the death of my little sister. In the summer of '65 Mandy and I were playing across the road in a woods pasture. I fell in the mud, made quite an impression on my mind and also in the mud. I cried and mother did not lick me. In the fall of '65 Pa traded the farm for a saw-mill about one mile east of the little farm, That winter I saw a doctor who had a wooden leg. I thought all doctors had a wooden leg. I think father saw the mill was on the decay. He sold it and took some notes, payable in yellow popular lumber. The mill soon went to junk. Dad never got his pay. (I saw one of the notes, years afterwards) We moved to a little place 2 miles North of uncle Ben's, Then Flo was born in May 1867. There Pa had a stallion, Probably lost money on that deal, In the fall of '67 we moved to a cabin across the corner from the Center School house. I was past five. Went to school a few days with Mandy. Dad and Ab. Hughes run a shingle mill that winter. Pa halled shingles to Logansport. Sold the poor (??) shingles to pay some of his debts. They cut the popular logs into shingle lingths, Split them into blocks about 6 X 6 inches. The machine was run by a horse power. The blocks were steamed, and while hot were cut into shingles, Every time the Knife came down, off dropped a shingle. In the spring of '68 we moved on to the Floyed place, There we got along better. There Cora was born in 1872. There father got ahead a little Got some sheep. He and Seth Street of Kokomo bought about 300 sheep. Rented a pasture, ??????? South Eeast of the Poor Farm, They sheared the sheep, Sold the wool for about 50 cts a pound, Then sold the sheep for as much as they payed for them. They made some money buying wool. That was in '72 and Dad must have 600 or 700 dollars to the good besides some stock. Then came the Panic of '73. But Pa bought the 40 on the pike, ¾ miles west of Uncle Ben's. I think Father went in debt some to buy that farm, but he built a house. (There May was born.) Interest was big. Couldn't keep it going. Sold cheap, Looked around for a place Went down to Alabama, over into Illinois. Finally bought a farm in Grant Co. about 20 miles east of Kokomo. Dad got a dandy 80. That was 1880. But couldn't make the interest and taxes, that was 1 1/2 miles east of Slash P.O. I have wished many times we could have kept that 80 Dad traded that fall for a 40 one half mile north of Slash which was changed to Normal. There is where we had the measles, and I nearly died. We were out of debt again. Towards spring he traded the land and his live stock for property and a stock of goods in Normal. That was a good trade, But dad was no store Keeper, Too easy on creditors. Rail Road built from Marion to Kokomo. Via Graen Town, That Road was just three miles north of our berg. I wanted dad to move over to the R.R. but he said he couldn't Swayzee is just 3 miles north of Normal, our berg, Again Dad traded. Got 40A, of timer land down by Anderson and a house and lot South of Marion somewhere, and got some notes. Which proved to be not much good. I never saw the timber land, but dad traded that on a stock of goods in Sulpher Springs That is South East of Anderson. Failed to pay his whole sale bills. Had to close out. Traded some of his old notes obtained at Slash for a 40 North East of Winamac. I never saw that. I got my eight grade diploma the spring of ''4, that was after I was 21. I tried teaching the winter of ''4 & ''5, Went to school at Ladoga (??) the summer of '85. Tried school again the winter of '85 & '86. In the spring of '85 we moved to a place west of Winamac that dad had traded for, I was in Rush both winter of '86 & '87 and '87 & '88 The school of '85 & '86 was in the Malay (??Malory) school. In the fall of '89 I commenced a school in the Mohler school where Clara Estella Wolary attended, I thought there was the girl for me a wife. One evening we were together and both began to say the same thing, We locked little fingers and wished, She was a very good speller and wished she might lock horns with another good speller in another school. I suspicioned she knew what I was wishing. So I told her. Soon after that I bought her a ring. Were married Dec. 25 1890. The summer of 1890 I took census of Jefferson and Medarville townships. And worked for Joe Kiggs in the Surveyors office. But it was in the Ridgeway school that I learned to beat the big boys in arithmatic. Stella and I commenced home keeping South of Winamac in White Co. In the fall of 1891 we came to S. Dak. It was while I was in Rush Co. that I made up my mind that Christianity was the correct way to worship the Almighty. Joined the Baptist and stayed with them 15 years before I found anything worth changing for. In 1902 I found that Christs Kingdom would have more people on earth than would ever get to heaven. Began reading The Watch Tower in Jan. 1903 have read every issue since. Have found that the light on the bible had been growing brighter. Now see quite clearly that only 144000 and one of all the people that have lived on earth, or ever will, will become heavenly creatures. When we came to Dak. We bought a quarter 3 miles west of Pierpont, Sold that in 1900, Filed a home-stead in the hills 3 miles N.E. of what is now Crandall, Sold that in 1907 visited Indiana, Bought a home in Conde where we have resided Ever since. I tried telling the good news of God's Kingdom by what was then called Pioneering for Scripture Studies. Found I could not keep that going, Fall of 1909 began Janitor work for school house was out of that from 1915 to 1918, There was janitor quite a few years, In the summer we put in many weeks publishing The King and Kingdom, Now I see the Vindication of Jehovah's name is the most important thing . The Axis powers, including the Catholic Hirarchy are slandering Jehovah's name and squeezing down on Jehovah's Witnesses. I hope the Axis Powers will soon "Come to his end and none shall help him" (??Dan 45) In the last few years my Strength has been decreasing, Can't stand but little cold or real labor. Harry is the one that is bringing in "the bacon" Wife is keeping home for Harry, his two children and myself. Thus she is making my living, My children.
