Description	:	Richard D. Brown was born on 6 Apr 1796 at New Hampshire. His early youth and childhood are unknown although his childhood was described in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Johnson County Nebraska (published in 1889) as in the “Dominion of Canada”. Brown. Charity was apparently living with her mother at the time of the birth as Richard was seeking homesteading land in Whiteside Couny, along with Charity’s brother James. He moved into Whiteside County Illinois as reported in History of Whiteside County. “Dr. Richard Brown entered Whiteside County in 1837 and practiced his profession for some time” (pg 343). (Note- History of Whiteside County Illinois is availble on Ancestry) He was enumerated in the Federal Census at on 1 Jun 1840 at Whiteside, Illinois, Richard Brown is listed as Head of Household with family included as one female age 15-20 (Charity would be 18 ), one male Richard D. Brown purchased th East fractional half of the southwest fractional quarter of Section 26, Township 19 of Range 3 East in the district of lands of Dixon, Illinois on on 22 Oct 1851 in at Whiteside, Illinois. The land was purchased for $125.00 and included 42 acres. (6)[vi] He used a land patent in 1852 at Whiteside, Illinois. Land records obtained from Whiteside County show purchase with a warrant in Whiteside County in 1852 of 40 acres. Richard sold East fractional half of the southwest fractional quarter of Section 26, Township 19 of Range 3 East in the district of of lands of Dixon, Illinois on 1 Oct 1853 at at Whiteside, Illinois, No price is given. (7)[vii] He and Charity sold Northeast quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section 25, Township 19, Range 4 East on 19 Nov 1853 at at Whiteside, Illinois, They sold the 40 acres for $100.00. (8)[viii] Richard and Charity sold the East half of the Northwest quarter of Section 25, Township 19, Range 4 east on 20 Feb 1855 at at Whiteside, Illinois, They sold 80 acres for $200.(9)[ix] He and Charity sold Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter of Section 25 Township 19 Range 4 on 1 Jan 1856 at at Whiteside, Illinois, They sold the 40 acres for $140. (10)[x] He purchased Northwest corner of the Northeast quarter and the Northeast quarter of the Northwest quarter of Section 35 Township 19 Range 3 on on 16 Jan 1856 at at Whiteside, Illinois. Richard bought 80 acres for $120.(11) [xi] He and Charity E. Brown sold East fractional half of the southwest fractional quarter of Section 26, Township 19 of Range 3 East in the district of lands of Dixon, Illinois on 26 Jan 1856 at at Whiteside, Illinois. They sold 42 acres for $350.00.(12)[xii] Richard and Charity sold the Northwest quarter of the Northeast quarter and the Northeast quarter of the Northwest quarter of Section 35 Township 19 range 3 on 31 Dec 1856 at at Whiteside, Illinois. They sold these 80 acres for $800.(13)[xiii] Richard D. Brown migrated at Johnson, Nebraska, in 1857 Richard entered Nebraska and sought a place to homestead, bringing the family to Helena the following year. According to a reference under John E. Brown in the Portrait and Biographical Album of Johnson County Nebraska (published in 1889), Richard was ". . . a native of New Hampshire and of English ancestry. He was reared in the Dominion of Canada, but came over into the States and subsequently made his way to Nebraska Territory, settling among the earliest pioneers of this county. The year following he was joined by our subject, who came in July 1858. The father died in Helena Precinct March 12, 1879. . . The parents were married in New York, passing their wedded life in Illinois and Nebraska. He purchased land with a bounty warrant from the US Government. The warrant originally belonged to Walter Henneburg. Richard claimed 160 acres as the Southeast quarter of Section 1 Township 6 North of range 10 East on this warrant. Script is # 76,324 The final Date of sale is August 16, 1858 on 16 Aug 1858 at Johnson, Nebraska.(14)[xiv] A child, Josephine, was born to Richard D. Brown and Charity 1859. He appeared on the agricultural portion of the census of 1 Jun 1860 at Helena, Johnson, Nebraska. Richard is listed as owning 160 acres of land, 50 of which are improved. The cash value of the farm was $1,000 with $100.00 worth of farming implements. Livestock listed includes 1 horse, 1 milch cow, 2 working oxen, and 8 swine. The value of the livestock was given as $200.00. He grew 300 bushels of Indian corn, 10 bushels of Irish potatoes and 8 tons of hay. He made 100 pounds of butter that year. The value of slaughter animals that year was $24.(15)[xv] He and Charity were enumerated in the Federal Census on 1 Jun 1860 at Helena, Johnson, Nebraska. Richard is cited as the head of the household, with wife Charity and 3 children, the last born in Nebraska. The census gives his occupation as farmer and his age as 50, stating his place of birth as New Hampshire. Charity gives her occupation as keeping house and age as 39.(16) [xvi] A child, Charlotte Eveline, was born to Richard and Charity 1861. Richard and Charity sold to James H. Rowe, Charity’s brother, the South half of the Northwest quarter of Section 1 Township 6 Range 10, consisting of 80 acres on 3 Mar 1862 at at Johnson, Nebraska.(17)[xvii] Richard D. Brown and Charity sold the Southeast quarter of Section 1 Township 6 north of Range 10 on 27 Nov 1869 at at Johnson, Nebraska.(18)[xviii] He and Charity were enumerated in the Federal Census at in 1870 at Sterling Precinct, Johnson, Nebraska. Richard is listed as head of household with wife Charity and 2 children. He reports his age as 74 and his occupation as a Physician. The census lists value of Real estate at 700 dollars and personal property at 420 dollars. Richard is not found on Agriculture Schedule that year.(19)[xix] He died on 12 Mar 1879 at Helena, Johnson, Nebraska, at age 82.
