She died at the home of her son, Dr. Philip Mc Quirk at Audubon, with whom she has been making her home for the past 15 years. Mrs. McQuirk was a strong, healthy woman until about 10 years ago, when she sustained a fall and broke her hip. She has apparently been in failing health since and has been unable to get around without the aid of crutches. Her recent illness which caused her death was of only a few weeks. The body was brought to the home of her son, J.D. McQuirk, on Sunday and funeral services were held at 9 am with Rev. Rather JJ Dalhoff in charge. Burial was made in the Sacred Heart cemetery by the side of her husband, who died in 1906 and daughter Zaidee Ruth who died 10 years ago. Honorary pall bearers are as follows: L.L. Ryan, Ed Stubbelfield, Fred Erdwins and Frank Bagley. The bearers at Early were four grandsons: Garis, Francis Phil, Robert and Lawrence McQuirk, and Joe Yender and George Puetz Rachel A Walker was born in Delaware county, Iowa, Sept 2, 1854. She was married in 1873 to Edward J. at Delhi and 3 years later came to Sac county and settle on a farm two miles northeast of the present town of Early. The land at that time was mostly prairie and but sparsely settled. They continued to make the farm their home for a number of years then moved to Early where she lived until 1923 when she went to Audubon to live with her unmarried son, Dr Philip. She was a devoted mother and friend to both young and old. Even in her later years she found pleasure in narrating incidents relative to thrilling experiences through which she passed during her early pioneer days. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs McQuirk, seven are living and were present at the funeral. The survivors are - Edward, Samuel and Mae of Plainview, SD.; Joseph, Spirit Lake: Ralph, Superior; Dr. Philip, Audubon; and James D., Early. Besides her children she is survived by several grandchildren. One brother and one half-sister preceded her in death. Relatives from away who attended the funeral were: Mrs. Elizabeth Whiting and Mrs. Lawrence Whiting, Dyersville; Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Reeves and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kernan, Sioux City, besides numerous relatives from Spirit Lake and Audubon. Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Thursday , February 10th, 1938 - Early - Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel A. McQuirk, 84, who died at the home of her son, Dr. Philip McQuirk of Audubon, were held at Sacred Heart church here Monday. She came to Sac county in 1876. She lived in Iowa all her life.
