Read More	A Typical Pioneer Mother - Came to Iowa in 1838 - Unusual Native Ability Rachel C. Smith was born on March 18, 1821, in Adams county, Ohio, and passed away at the home of her son, John H. Casady, Friday, March 19, 1915, at 4 in the morning, at the age of 94 years and one day. Her funeral was from the Cantril Christian Church March 21, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, conducted Elder B.W. Pettit. Interment was in Maple Grove cemetery. In her early childhood, with her parents she moved to Indiana, and about 18?8 the family came to Davis county, Iowa. On May 21, 1840, she was united in marriage to John Casady by Conrad Craven. They moved to Van Buren county where she ever afterwards lived. Her husband preceded her to the other world February 10, 1873, 42 years. She was the mother of nine children as follows: - Sampson, who died in early childhood; an infant son, who died in infancy; Rebecca Stott(?), who died at Boise City, Idaho, about three months ago; William P., who died 17 years ago; Elizabeth M. who died at the age of 14 years; Selman A., and John H. of Cantril; Volney N. of Troy, Iowa, and Etta May Powell, of Centerville, Iowa; all of her surviving children were present at the funeral. She also leaves 24 grand children and 23 great grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends. The day before her death being her 94 birthday anniversary, her children were all with her as had long been their custom on the return of that day. In 1874 she united with the Christian church congregation at at old Egypt, and on the first day of January, 1881, she became a charter member of the Cantril Christian church, organized by Elder Wm. Sweeney, and was a regular attendant of the service until about four years ago. She took great pleasure in counting the strokes of the bell as it rang morning and evening of preaching. After her husband's death she remained on the farm ten years or to 1883 when she moved to Cantril and lived alone for several years, but for the last 20 years she made her home with her son, John H., who spared neither time nor money in doing everything that would contribute to her comfort, contentment and happiness. Her husband, John Casady, to whom she was married in 1840, died in 1873 and at her death her age was just one day over 94 years. Everybody liked aunt Rachael. She was a member of the Christian church and the funeral services were held last Sunday in charge of her pastor Eld. Pettit. Four children survive, J. H. and D. E.
