Description	:	Rachel Cora Garth was born at Swaledale, Yorkshire County, England to James and Mary (Whitfield) Garth on Sep. 4, 1850. The family emigrated, when Rachel was an infant, to the United States in 1851. The family built a home on a small farm at Rockdale, Iowa (called Table Mound at the time) (just outside of Dubuque) in the area of The Mines of Spain where her father James and the older boys were lead miners. They prospered there being lead miners in England and knowing how to seperate the lead from the ore. They were able to keep 90% of... Read More	Rachel Cora Garth was born at Swaledale, Yorkshire County, England to James and Mary (Whitfield) Garth on Sep. 4, 1850. The family emigrated, when Rachel was an infant, to the United States in 1851. The family built a home on a small farm at Rockdale, Iowa (called Table Mound at the time) (just outside of Dubuque) in the area of The Mines of Spain where her father James and the older boys were lead miners. They prospered there being lead miners in England and knowing how to seperate the lead from the ore. They were able to keep 90% of the earnings and the other 10% to local government. Her father James was killed in a horse and buggy accident in 1863, when he got in to go get a hair cut and the horse bolted throwing him into a fence post and he died a few days later (Jan 10, 1865). The family moved and came West in 1869 using covered wagons to Hamilton County, Iowa, with one brother remaining at the Dubuque home. They were located between Webster City, Woolstock and Blairsburg. Rachel Married, Hiram Delos Welch April 30, 1873, who farmed in Wright County, just to the South of Mother Mary Garth's home place. To this marriage there were 10 children. Five boys and five girls. She has been a loving and devoted Mother and will be remembered by her kind deeds and cheerful words given to her family and friend through life. Hiram Delos Welch passed away at their Wright County home April 11, 1908. Three children died at birth. Emilia, Celia, Harvey Leslie R. Welch, Long Beach California Minnie e. Collins of Clear Lake officiating and burial was made in the Cass Cemetery NE of Webster City.
