FRANK FELL AND FAMILY ------------------------------------------------------ The Inquirer - February 8, 1896 MRS. RACHEL G. FELL DIES IN IOWA. Mrs. Rachel G. Fell, formerly of Little Britain, this county died at the home of her son, Benjamin Fell, near Clarence, Iowa, on January 18, aged 84 years, 3 months and 10 days. She was the daughter of Josiah and Margaret Brown, and sister to Ellwood Brown, formerly a well-known citizen of Little Britain township. In 1835 she was married to Francis G. Fell who died in 1848. Their only child, Benjamin, still survives. In 1855 she moved to Iowa where she has since resided. Her death was caused by a general breaking up of the system consequent on old age. Mrs. Fell was a woman of more than usual intelligence and mental force. She was a writer of more than ordinary power and some of her productions, both in prose and verse, possessed great merit. She was greatly interested in all the questions of the day, especially antislavery and temperance and contributed many interesting articles on these and kindred subjects. Mrs. Fell was one of the founders of Eastland Lyceum, the most successful literary institution that ever existed in Southern Lancaster count. It began its career in 1841 and had a most important educational influence on the community in that region of country. It flourished for many years, but has not been in existences since about 1850. Deceased was noted for her hospitality and social qualities and her memory will be cherished by those of her friends who survive. Contributor: Jo Comment #1-I have found that Rachel Brown married Francis Fell. Then she married a Carter and then Levi Townsend. Levi and Rachel were living separately in 1880 though. May I ask where you found her middle name "Grace"? Cindy Schroeder, A Townsend descendant. 07 2010 Comment #2-I don't know the answer, but are you sure that Rachel m this Levi Townsend? Levi was married 3x. His first wife d in 1848, and he remarried one year later in 1849 in OH. His 2nd wife d 1869 in OH, and he remarried a 3rd time in 1874 (5 years later) in IA. His 3rd wife outlived him and d 1889. I'm wondering when Levi allegedly m Rachel, who also outlived him? Also IF she was last married to Levi Townsend, the FAG memorial should list her as a Townsend, not Fell. CAPT Sharon Davis, USN (Ret) Comment #3-Sharon, yes they divorced. There is supposed to be records of it in Cedar county, Iowa but last time I requested copies they said their microfilm printer was broke. Anna (Wharton) Townsend passed away on October 28, 1869. Then in 1870 Levi moved from Harrisville, Short Creek township, Harrison county, Ohio to Cedar county, Iowa where he was married to Rachel Grace (Brown) Carter on July 25, 1870. She was previously married twice, first to Francis G. Fell on July 31, 1834 and secondly to Amor Carter on August 31, 1854 at West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania. She divorced Amor Carter and he went back to Pennsylvania. Her son by her first marriage, Frances Benjamin Fell was married to Mary T. Wood, daughter of Elizabeth (Townsend) and Joseph Mosher Wood. After Levi’s marriage to Rachel, he can be found in 1871 living in Des Moines, rooming with his grandson Levi T. Townsend. On October 11, 1873 Rachel (Brown) Fell-Carter Townsend files for divorce from Levi. On October 10, 1874, Levi married Sarah Jane (Long) Buckley Hornsby in Des Moines, Polk county, Iowa with her son-in-law Joseph Rosser as witness.
