The family migrated down the Ohio River settling first in Ross County, Ohio when Rachel was a little girl. They settled there because of the presence of a fort, but were plagued by malaria and the ague. They moved to neighboring Jackson County to avail themselves of the sulphur springs, but this move opened them to the worry of the Indians in the immediate area.
