They grew up in New Providence and Honey Creek, Iowa but moved to Alden, Iowa when Ralph's mail route was transferred to Alden from New Providence. Rachel was born Rachel Nadine Walton to Ralph and Marie Humeston Walton along with her sister Sara Lee and brother Phillip J. They grew up in New Providence and Honey Creek, Iowa but moved to Alden, Iowa when Ralph's mail route was transferred to Alden from New Providence. Nadine, as she was called, decends from a long line of Quaker pioneers who settled the Honey Creek and New Providence areas in the mid 1800's. The Reece family gathered a group of 44, including children as young as 8 weeks, and traveled from North Carolina to Iowa in search of a better life. Their desire was to freely observe their chosen religious practices, one of which was to denounce slavery. Friends truly believe that all persons are created equally and are deserving of respect, love, and kindness. This group of pioneers established the Quaker churches in New Providence and Honey Creek, holding their first meetings in their homes. My DAR application is based upon the service of Abraham Reece. Nadine attended Alden High School where she was in the band, glee club, and graduated from Alden High School with a goal of becoming an executive secretary and work to support the troops during WWII. She fulfilled her goal attending college and business school to gain the necessary education. She then moved to Denver, CO where she was employed by companies which provided supplies to support the war. After the war she moved to Phoenix, Arizona where she met and married George Taylor Dearing. They raised two children, Diane and Hugh. Nadine lived her life in service to her church and community in various activities. She sang in the church choir for 30 years and was a Girl Scout leader for 10 years. She and her husband were members of the Dons of Arizona, an organization which serves to educate the public with regard to the legend and lore of Arizona and the great Southwest. Nadine and her husband traveled the world visiting Italy, Ireland, England, and Hong Kong. Her life was full and rewarding. It is to her I credit my sense of family tradition and have continued her reasearch into our family history. It has been an incredible journey so far.
