(Thomas) Whitney, 93, daughter of a Montana pioneer family passed away July 28 in the Pondera Nursing Home where she had been a resident for the past three years. She was born Dec. 25, 1894 on Highwood Creek. Her father, William H. Thomas was born in Utah, came to Bannack and Virginia City in 1863. He later freighted from Fort Benton to Fort McCloud and in 1887 settled on a homestead on Highwood Creek. He passed away in 1934. Her mother, Adelaide Steell was the daughter of Maj. George Steell who came up the Missouri River to Fort Benton in 1862 as an employee of the Old American Fur Company, and later with Mathew Carroll formed the pioneer firm of Carroll & Steell. She passed away in 1897. Rachel went to live at St. Peter's Mission, near Cascade, until 1899. She then attended school at the Visitation Academy in Dubuque, IA, until she was 12, when she and her sister returned to the home ranch on Highwood Creek. She married Charles Whitney in 1924, living in Fort Benton and moving to Conrad in 1937 where he owned and operated Whitney's Motor Service until retirement in 1975. Whitney was active in the St. Michael's Guild and the Conrad Garden Club in her earlier years. Preceding her in death were her husband in 1983, sister in 1975 and brother in 1979. She is survived by four daughters; Mrs. Thomas (Ruth) Corbally, of Great Falls, Mrs. Thomas (Helene) Ellis, Mrs. J.M. (Virginia) Robinson, and Mrs. Robert (Charlotte) Hovde, all of Conrad; twenty five grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Vigil services were held Sunday evening at the Wyse Funeral Home with a Funeral Mass, Monday morning at St. Michael's Church with Rev. Jim Connor officiating. Burial was in the family plot at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
