"Mickey" McDevitt, 82, of Pendleton Street, passed away peacefully at 3:12 pm, Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Salem Community Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Mr. McDevitt was born May 29, 1925 in Lisbon, the son of the late, Raymond and Dorothy (Brown) McDevitt. At the age of 17, Mickey enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII. "Mickey" McDevitt, 82, of Pendleton Street, passed away peacefully at 3:12 pm, Friday, October 19, 2007 at the Salem Community Hospital following a brief battle with cancer. Mr. McDevitt was born May 29, 1925 in Lisbon, the son of the late, Raymond and Dorothy (Brown) McDevitt. At the age of 17, Mickey enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in WWII. After being honorably discharged, he returned and completed high school and then attended Ohio Northern University, where he played football. He then reenlisted and was a 20-year Navy career veteran. After the Navy, he worked 10 years for Bliss Manufacturing and in 1978 began working at the Veteran's Service office, until he retired in 1990. A member of the Lisbon First United Methodist Church, he was also a member of the Salem AmVets; Lisbon VFW Post 4111, where he served many times as Post Commander; All State Commander, Past District Commander, and County Commander; the Lisbon American Legion; John Covert Chapter 47 DAV of East Liverpool; the Salem Elks Lodge; the Lisbon Eagles; and the "Tin Can Sailors". His wife, Anne J. (Muntean) McDevitt, whom he married November 18, 1951, preceded him in death. January 27, 1993. He is survived by his son, Wayne (Denise) McDevitt of Lisbon; granddaughter, Shannon McDevitt of Columbus, grandson, Michael McDevitt of Lisbon and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Mr. McDevitt was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Ann McDevitt and sister, Shirley Hiscox. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Monday, October 22, 2007 at the Lisbon First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Betsy Schenk officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Lisbon Cemetery. Friends may call from 2pm until 5pm, Sunday at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home and from 10 am until the time of service Monday at the church. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made, if desired, to the Lisbon Alumni Association or to the American Cancer Society. 10/20/07
