Silver Jr. Info from the master cemetery records of the Deer Creek Harmony Church ************** Ralph DeWitt Walker of Havre de Grace died June 12 at his home with his wife and family near him after a long battle with cancer. He was 85. Mr. Walker was born Feb. 18, 1921 on the family farm at what was then known as Walker's Corner in Havre de Grace, the son of the late Wilber and Elsie Bye-Walker. He was the first born of four children. He was a lifelong farmer and retired rural mail carrier. Family members said Mr. Walker received his primary education at Forest Institute, a one-room school house near his home on Paradise Road. His morning responsibility at school was to start the fire in the woodstove in the classroom. He graduated from Havre de Grace High School in 1938and after working in two local general stores went on to attend the University of Maryland, College Park, where he shared an apartment with his future brother-in-law, Benjamin Stump Silver. After two years at college, he enlisted in the Army, serving from March 11, 1943 to Aug 21, 1945. He was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. During his enlistment he played saxophone in an Army jazz band. On July 12, 1947, he married Ruth Hopkins Silver at Webster Congregational Christian Church. Their only child, Benjamin "Scott" Walker, was born May 21, 1963. A fourth generation farmer by birth, Mr. Walker lived his entire civilian life on the family farm. Family said he was proud the farm had been owned and operated by the Walker family since 1864. He loved the farm life and while in the dairy business, built one of the area's first milking parlors. In the mid 1960s he gradually converted from the dairy to the beef business and was still active in farming at the time of his death. Mr. Walker had dual occupations as a farmer and a rural mail carrier, serving the outlying areas of west and north of Havre de Grace, for 36 years, making numerous friends and acquaintances along his route. He was a lifelong member of Webster Church, where he served on various committees and sang in the choir. He was a member of the American Farm Bureau Federation and a past member of the Level Volunteer Fire Co. and a Harford group called Farmers Club. He was named a Harford County Living Treasure in 2003. In 1985, Mr. Walker and his family purchased the old Hopkins farm on West Chapel Road, and in 1988 that farm was placed in the Maryland State Agricultural Preservation Program. In 2001 he placed his home farm in the program. Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Hopkins Silver; his son, Benjamin Scott Walker Sr. and his wife, Rebecca Dawn Walker, of Aberdeen; a grandson, Benjamin Scott Walker Jr.; a stepgrandson, Samuel Joseph Fox of Ocean City; and two step-granddaughters, Amanda Nicole and Victoria Shannon Fox of Aberdeen. He was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley Walker and Wilber Walker Jr.; a sister, Elizabeth Walker Walstrum; and a grandson, Jacob Scott Walker. Funeral service will be June 16 at 10 am at Webster Congregational Church, with Pastor Lonna Smith officiating. Interment will be in Harmony Presbyterian Cemetery in Darlington.
