Duane was born Feb. 24, 1936, in Haxtun to Eldon Howard Hutt and Catherine Powell. Duane was a very active boy and was raised with a strong work ethic. His best friend growing up was Jerry Price, and the two of them were inseparable. They rode horses to their first grade school, Sunrise School. When they were 8 years old, Duane and Jerry took part in the cattle drive from Wyoming to Haxtun on their spotted horses. During this trip, Duane scalded his mouth and throat with hot coffee. This is why he always had ice cubes in his coffee and ate his food cold. He enjoyed hunting as a boy and riding his spotted pony. He graduated from Haxtun High School in 1954, leaving behind school records in track that were not broken for 20 years. Duane joined the United States Navy in 1954 and served until 1962. Duane was married to Nina Freemeyer for 24 years. They started their life in Haxtun on a farm. They had three children together — Rocky, Emory and Naomi. During their marriage, Duane participated in rodeo competitions. He was a true cowboy with cracked ribs that never healed. In 1968 and 1969, he was one of the top 10 competitors of the Colorado Rodeo Association in bull and bronco riding. He also worked as an auctioneer in his father’s sale barn. Duane received a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University with a double major in poultry pathology and new technology. After college, he worked for Nicholas Turkey. He assisted with some of the first genetic breeding of turkeys, which resulted in the development of the Swift Butterball turkey. Due to his success, Duane moved his family to North Carolina and continued his work in poultry genetics. A change in professions again began with the construction of Butler Buildings. But due to the recession, he changed professions yet again and became a herdsman and worked in the dairy industry. The family then moved to South Dakota, where Duane worked for T.E. Iberson Construction Company as a superintendent. He moved to Texas to assist with a 30-acre project as a general superintendent of 40 subcontractors. It was during this time that Duane returned to Haxtun. His return reintroduced him to “that Price girl,” Lennette Thompson, on New Year’s Day 1980. Duane had the extreme pleasure of wedding Lennette on May 6, 1980, and has fondly referred to her as his girlfriend, true friend, lover and his wife. They blended their two families together, as Lennette had four children — Ty, Gidget, Trevor and Tad Thompson. They started their life together in Cheyenne, Wyo., with Duane working in construction, but due to another small recession, he supported his family working as a chef for a country club. They then moved the family to Idaho Falls, Idaho, and he worked insurance for five years. Each time they moved, children left by going to college and starting their lives. Lennette and Duane moved to Virginia to be closer to the grandchildren. While in Virginia, he worked for Ted Britt Ford, then Coles Ford, and finally Battlefield Ford. He received numerous sales awards and became known all over the East Coast as “Hooter.” Ever the devoted husband, he followed his wife back to Haxtun, where she returned to care for her ailing parents. He continued to be a provider, working for McAfee Paving in Sterling upon his return. Duane was an active member of each community he lived in and was active with the Boy Scouts when his boys were involved. He volunteered as a lay minister in North Carolina and sang in nursing homes and was greatly enjoyed because he was “pitch perfect.” He also sang in his church choir. Duane was a member of the Haymarket Masonic Lodge in Virginia and a member of Haxtun United Methodist Church. After moving back to Colorado, he actively pursued getting Boys State and Girls State activated in the local Haxtun community again to give youth in the Haxtun community opportunities to further their future. He was the commander of the American Legion for 12 years in Haxtun. He also served as a counselor for Boys State. Duane was predeceased in death by his parents; brothers, Eugene and Melvin Leroy; son, Tad Thompson; and his first wife, Nina. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lennette Hutt; son, Rocky and wife Ivy Hutt of Fredericksburg, Va.; son, Emory and wife Beth Hutt of Falls Church, Va.; daughter, Naomi Marachell of Alexandria, Va.; son, Ty and wife Susan Thompson of Warrington, Va.; daughter, Gidget and husband Joe Rosemond of Cibolo, Texas; son, Trevor and wife Debra Thompson of Gill; granddaughter, Ellen Carter Nicholas and husband Jared Nicholas and great-grandsons Ethan Carter and Grayson Nicholas of York, Pa.; granddaughter, Julia Hutt and great-grandsons Benjamin Hutt and Caleb Oden of Fredericksburg, Va.; granddaughter, Mary and husband Jason Bodkins of Bridgewater, Va.; granddaughter, Edith and husband Pasquale Onorato and great-grandsons Rocco and Tony Onorato of Enterprise, Ala.; granddaughter, Anna Hutt of Fredericksburg, Va.; granddaughter, Etta Reyes and great-granddaughters Hanna and Elisa Figeroa of Stanton Island, N.Y.; grandsons, Steele Thompson of Lansdowne, Va., and Cody Thompson of Warrenton, Va.; granddaughters, Tristan of Lubbock, Texas, and Tori Rosemond of Cibolo, Texas; and granddaughter Kajalina Thompson and grandson Scott Thompson of Gill. The memorial service was held Oct. 1 at Haxtun United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeri Soens officiating. Cremation was chosen, and burial will be at a later date at the Wray Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Boys State and Girls State in care of the Haxtun American Legion, 129 N. Colorado Ave., Haxtun, CO 80731. Gerk Funeral Home was entrusted with the arrangements.
