Ralph was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Cascade, the son of Barney and Agnes (Ressler) Otting. He received his education in the former St. Mary's School in Cascade. Ralph was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served as a staff sergeant in the Army during the entire period of World War II from 1941 to 1945. He was shipped to Ireland and England and saw heavy combat duty in Africa and Italy, including the Battle at Anzio Beach. On Sept. 16, 1947, he was united in marriage to Margaret Ann Kurt at St. Mary's Church in Cascade. Ralph was a mechanic all his life. Ralph enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and loved to discuss local history with friends and neighbors. He was a member of St. Matthias Parish in Cascade, the Cascade American Legion-Post No. 528, for which he served as past commander, a member of the Tri-County Historical Society, for which he served as past president, and a member of the Knights of Columbus-Council No. 930. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Ann Otting of Cascade; six children, Annette (Justin) Connolly of Peosta, Phil (Sheila) Otting, Greg (Gloria) Otting, Linda (Joe) Schockemoehl, Barney (Suz) Otting and Leo (Shelley) Otting, all of Cascade; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Rita Frost of Waterloo. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and five sisters. A Ralph H. Otting memorial fund has been established. Thanks to Dr. Dall for all the wonderful care throughout the years, and also thanks to the nurses and staff who cared for Ralph at Mercy Medical Center.
