"A pontoon bridge was built under heavy traffic and machine gun fire and my company crossed the river with the Thirty-eighth infantry and helped drive the Germans out of Chateau Thierry that day. There was terrific hand-to-hand fighting in the west half of the town. The Germans had a machine gun firing from the clock in the city hall tower which commanded the street leading to the bridge." "Machine guns on the hill back of the town where the old chateau formerly stood also swept the advancing American troops. But that did not stop them. The counter attack was a big surprise to the Germans." Adkisson escaped without wounds but was slightly gassed.
