Overton Funeral Home, Dysart, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements. Ralph was born February 7, 1913, in Lost Nation, the youngest of two sons and two daughters, to Mathias and Anna (Kula) Ales. Ralph also had an older sister and brother who his father brought to the marriage from his first wife, who passed away. Ralph acquired all of his public education in Lost Nation where he graduated from high school in 1930. After high school, he spent one year as a student at the Catholic St. Ambrose College in Davenport, which at that time accepted only male students. While there, Ralph played drums in the college band. His first position out of college was to operate a gasoline tanker truck for the Blackhawk Oil Company. In 1935, Ralph began a business venture by building a gasoline service station on Highway 136 in Lost Nation. Thus began a relationship with the Shell Oil Company which was to last for over 45 years. In 1933, Ralph met Helen Allen, whose family lived in Oxford Junction, Iowa. They were married on May 9, 1936 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Lost Nation and moved into a home formerly owned by Ralph's parents. Their first daughter, Karmen Kay, was born November 9, 1937, and the second, Margie Ann, arrived July 4, 1941. In 1948, Ralph and a business partner purchased Blackhawk Oil Company of Lost Nation, where they operated a bulk fuel business that transported Shell Oil Products. In addition to his vocation, Ralph distinguished himself as an integral part of community life. For over 60 years he served as a volunteer fireman for Lost Nation, which also responded to fire emergencies in Sharon Township and seven other neighboring towns. During this period, he was Fire Chief from 1952 to 1974 and then, for the following 22 years, he was the assistant chief. He was also Mayor of Lost Nation from 1966 to 1969 and again from 1978 to 1981. Part of the mayoral responsibility included a concurrent tenure as town magistrate. He was also elected vice chairman of the Clinton County Crime Commission. Ralph's other volunteer activities included those associated with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, fundraising for the 4H Club, serving as organizer of community parades, Member of the Lost Nation Sportsman's Club, and a host of other leadership assignments. In 1976, Ralph sold the oil distribution business and retired from his entrepreneurial responsibilities, but not from work itself. For several years thereafter, he assumed part-time duties at the Lost Nation Cement Company while pursuing an avocation of hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen; a daughter, Margie (John) Rice, of Dysart; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters, a daughter, Karmen Kay Frandsen, and a great-granddaughter, Mary Robinson. (Source: Quad City Times)
