Ralph was born in Winsted on April 15, 1919, the only child of Frederick Ralph and Grace Brown Scoville. He lived his entire life in West Cornwall. Center on Dec. 14, 2011. He was the husband of Thalia (Hicock) Scoville. Ralph was born in Winsted on April 15, 1919, the only child of Frederick Ralph and Grace Brown Scoville. He lived his entire life in West Cornwall. He began his early education with Mrs. Elsie Cochrane, then on to the West Cornwall School in what is now the West Cornwall Library, finishing at the Gilbert School in Winsted. Uncle Sam beckoned in August 1941. Basic training was in Fort Bragg, N.C., in the Ninth Division. Active combat duty began in November 1942 with the first amphibious landing in North Africa and continues through Sicily, Belgium, across Europe and ending at the Elbe River where the U.S. troops met the Russians. Driving an ammunition truck, he amassed more than 400 days of combat duty. Upon discharge in August, he served the Town of Cornwall as a selectman and as Town Road foreman, before becoming a full-time dairy farmer. On April 5, 1947, he married Thalia Painter Hicock, daughter of Ely Pierce and Evelyn Williams Hicock, in the Federal Church of Southbury. Together they raised five children; Grace Evelyn Kandefer of New Hartford, Eliza Allen Cleaveland of Bloomfield, Frederick Ralph Scoville of Denville, N.J., and Maria Wadams Bonetti of East Canaan. He was predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla Ensign Scoville. In addition to his wife, and his children, he leaves 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at United Church of Christ, 8 Boltin Hill Road, Cornwall. Burial with full military honors will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. at the West Cornwall Cemetery before the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the New Ambulance Fund, c/o Cornwall Fire Department, P.O. Box180, West Cornwall 06796. The Kenny Funeral Home, 41 Main St., Sharon, has care of arrangements.
