Two Wabash men were fatally hurt and another was slightly injured as their auto crashed into the side of a truck and trailer at the sharp curve of Federal Road 24 at the Higley road intersection, three miles west of here, shortly after 2 o'clock Saturday morning. The dead are: RALPH KNOTTS, 24, 1011 Pike street, employee of the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator company, driver of the car, and GERALD COOK, 37, 597 East Hill street, tree surgeon. Richard R. Hoberg, 25, 49½ Manchester avenue, the third occupant of the auto, employed as a government inspector in the Honeywell plant, is confined to Dukes Memorial hospital in Peru, suffering from shock, bruises and a cut on the forehead. His condition is not serious, however, and he probably will be released ruing the week. Coroner Todd Bender said Knott's death was due to skull fracture, while it was believed Cook suffered a crushed chest. Knotts was almost instantly killed in the crash and Cook died at 6:30 o'clock in the Wabash County hospital. Investigation of the mishap was made during the day by the coroner, Sheriff Vear Howell, Deputy Sheriff Sterling Staver and State Patrolman Clifford Snyder. The fatalities were the first of this nature in Wabash county since early February, and boosts the death toll for the year to four. According to investigators the three men were returning from a visit to Nick Carter's roadouse, east of Peru, when the accident occurred. Apparently Knotts was unable to negotiate the curve on the federal road and sidwswiped the westbound Ford truck and trailer, owned by Gerald Barlow, Rensselaer, and operated by Edward Cannon, 21, also of that city. The Rensselaer men, neither of whom was injured, were hauling 10 tons of fertilizer from Sandusky, O., to their home town. In the collision, the entire left side of the auto, a 1937 Oldsmobile sedan, owned by Knotts, was ripped off, the door on the driver's side was folded around the corner of the trailer bed, duo wheels at the left front shaft were left suspended in air. All three of the men were riding in the front seat, it was learned, but Hoberg was on the right side and escaped the crushing blow in the impact with the truck. He was picked up by a passing motorist and taken to Peru. The Knotts body was taken to the Grandstaff Funeral home in Roann, and Cook was removed in an ambulance to the local hospital, and afterwards to the Wire Funeral home. Knotts was born Aug. 8, 1906 at Vernon in the south part of the county, the son of William L. and Orilla (Hutchinson) Knotts. He was married in 1926 in Miami county to Dorothy Black, who survives together with two children, Phyllis and Richard; three brothers, Garl Knotts of Marion, and Everett Knotts and (twin brother) Raymond Knotts of City city, and one sister, Mrs. Bernice Weimer of Florida. Mr. Knotts had been a resident of Wabash for the last seven years. He was a member of the First Brethren church of Roann and the Knights of Pythias and Eagles lodges of Wabash. The body was taken to the residence on the south side Sunday evening. Funeral servcies will be held in the Roann First Brethren Church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock with the pastor, P.M. Naff, officiating. Burial will be in the Vernon cemetery.
