Ralph Leonard Carroll was born in Sumner, Iowa, on December 30, 1922, the son of Ralph W. and Julia Maude (Kellerhalls) Carroll. Read More	Ralph Carroll, age 92, of 1110 South Marshall Street, passed away peacefully with his wife and daughter by his side on December 6, 2014, at the Westhaven Community. Ralph Leonard Carroll was born in Sumner, Iowa, on December 30, 1922, the son of Ralph W. and Julia Maude (Kellerhalls) Carroll. He was raised with two brothers and two sisters in Sumner and graduated from Sumner High School in 1941. Ralph married Betty Dorland in 1941 and they had two daughters, Jan and Jill. In 1943, he was inducted in the United States Army and served with the Army Air Corps. Ralph was an airplane mechanic and a tail gunner on a B24. He flew 40 missions in the Pacific, New Guinea, Dutch East Indies, Philippines, Admiralty Islands, and Waukee Island, and Morti Island. He was discharged in 1945. Ralph graduated from Upper Iowa University in 1948, and Drake University in 1951, earning his Masters of Arts Degree and a Major in Physical Education. He started teaching and coaching at Odell High School in Odell, Oregon, from 1948 to 1950, Leon High School in Leon, Iowa, from 1951 to 1953, and Boone High School from 1953 to 1985, when he retired. At Boone High School, Ralph coached boys football and girls basketball and his 1958 Boone High Girls Basketball team went to the State Tournament. He served as School Board Member from 1986 to 1992. On December 26, 1967, Ralph married Joyce Hollingshead Lasko in Boone. The couple enjoyed traveling throughout the United States on business trips and daily road excursions throughout Iowa. Ralph loved farming his acreage and enjoyed his hobbies of trapping, hunting and fishing, and raising fox, ferrets, and rabbits. He also enjoyed bible study and was a member of the Central Christian Church. Ralph is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Jill Carroll Wolf, who died of cystic fibrosis in 1977, two sisters, and a brother. He is survived by his wife Joyce of Boone; his daughter Jan (Jim) Fuegen of West Des Moines; grandchildren Jon Peterson, Austin Peterson, and Angela Dose; two step sons, Mike Lasko of Luther and Jim (Jessie) Lasko of Kelso, Washington; grandchildren, Brett, Kelly, Andrew, McKay, Riley, and Tate Lasko; and great grandchildren, Kyle and Kennedy Dose, and Evelyn, Lydia, and Adelaide Lasko.
