Read More	BlaKely Funerla Home and Crematory obituary Ralph Lipscomb Smith, 89, of 949 Goucher School Road, Gaffney, S.C. went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 15, 2021 surrounded, in the comfort of his home, by his family that he loved dearly. Born in Gaffney, S.C. he was the husband of the late Carolyn Jolly Smith and the son of the late Elbert Edwin Smith and late Carrie Elizabeth Smith. He was preceded in death by his brothers William Hilliard Smith and Edwin Elbert Smith. He was a great patriot who loved his God, his family and his country. At the age of seventeen he left high school to join the U.S. Navy to fight in the Korean War. He served June 1948-June 1952 on the USS Toledo CA-133 as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class. He often said those years of the Korean War were some of the hardest of his life. He revered his country and said he would serve all over again if he could. He married the love of his life when he returned home from the war, built a home in the Goucher community and started a family. He considered being a husband and father his greatest calling in life. Ralph and Carolyn were married for 67 years before her death in 2019. Ralph was self-employed most of his working life and also was a member of the Cherokee County Council from 1969-1981. Surviving are two children, Wanda D. Smith of Gaffney and Collis Ralph Smith (Lenna) of Greer, S.C.; two grandchildren Walker Ralph Smith (Ashtyn) of Greenville, S.C. and Lydia Ann Smith of Denver, Co. He welcomed into his heart (by his son’s marriage) three other grandchildren, Christy Neill Berry (Dave) of Jacksonville, Fl., Lenna Neill Dacus (Tommy) of Easley, S.C. and Paul Michael Neill of Fort Wayne, In., as well as five great-grandchildren, Jackson, Patrick, Kate, Reeves and Levi. He was known as a man after God’s own heart serving his church, Goucher Baptist Church and community faithfully. His days always ended with scripture reading and prayer. He knew no fear in life and looked forward to the homecoming Jesus had promised him upon his salvation. The family would like to extend special thanks to Kindred Hospice and Lisa Martinez for their wonderful and compassionate care. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 in the Goucher Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Dennis Spencer and Mr. Collis Ralph Smith officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside. Social distancing and masks are requested. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Goucher Baptist Church, 415 Goucher Creek Road, Gaffney, S.C. 29340. The family will be at their residence.
