Written on the Burial of a soldier 1863, Winterset, Iowa The hazards of war were brought home quite forcibly to the people of Wessington this week when the body of a young soldier, who had been in training for the defense of his country in a camp in California was brought back here for burial in the family lot in the cemetery west of town where his mother had been laid to rest a good many years ago. The young man was Ralph Borah, the son of Henry Borah, one of the pioneer settlers of the northeast country, now residing at Bonilla. He was in his twentieth year, having passed his 19th birthday last September. He was born on a farm near Bonilla and resided there until the 21st of April last year when in company with another young man from the neighborhood, Sidney Parkinson he left for Jefferson Barracks, Missouri where the two of them were sworn into service of the United States as volunteers. They were soon sent to the Border at Noglas, Arizona where they remained for some weeks. From this point they were transferred to San Francisco, and on January 3rd, last, they were sent to Camp Fremont, about 25 miles south of San Francisco. They were members of Company M. 62nd Infantry. Young Borah had been advanced to the rank of Mechanic. About three weeks ago young Borah contracted a severe cold which developed into pneumonia. At 10:30 Sunday, April 21st, just a year to a day from the time he had left home so full of patriotism and zeal for the service of his country, the spirit of the brave young soldier broke away from its earthly moorings and winged its way to a land where wars are never known. According to military custom his comrade in arms, Sidney Parkinson, was designated as a body guard, or guest of honor, to accompany the remains to this point, all the expense of the trip being paid by the government. Funeral Services were conducted in the Scenic Hall here Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Spence preaching the surmon. All the military honors were conferred. The Home Guards of Bonilla with all of whom he had been intimately acquainted, came over in a body and a large number of the friends and neighbors were also in attendance. The Wessington school was dismissed and the children took part in the procession. The Hall was not half large enough to accommodate the crowd again forcibly demonstrating our need of larger quarters for public gatherings. It was one of the largest funerals that has ever been conducted in Wessington. Every honor is due this young man who has thus sacrificed his life for his country. His willingness to serve shows that his spirit was just as loyal as though he had died on the field of battle from wounds inflicted by the enemy.
