Description	:	The Daily Nonpareil (Council Bluffs, Iowa) March 14, 2012 Ralph O. Bean, of Council Bluffs, passed away on March 9th, 2012, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital after a brief illness. Ralph was born on February 2nd, 1919, to George Morton and Lillian May (Orwig) Bean, on a farm Northwest of Auburn, Iowa. He graduated from Laurens High School in 1938. Ralph was born on February 2nd, 1919, to George Morton and Lillian May (Orwig) Bean, on a farm Northwest of Auburn, Iowa. He graduated from Laurens High School in 1938. In 1940 he enlisted in the Army and was due to get out the end of that year, but the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7th and he spent the next 5 years serving in the 205th Corp MP Company. He was stationed in Ireland, England, Scotland, North Africa and Italy. His unit was responsible for guarding General Eisenhower, General Mark Clark and General Omar Bradley. While in North Africa he stood honor guard for all foreign dignitaries and all American Generals. Ralph also played baseball in the North Africa World Series. After returning from the war he met and married Margery Lofquist on August 14, 1946. They farmed in Laurens, Iowa, for 13 years, and had four children. Ralph and Margery moved to Council Bluffs, in 1959, where he joined the USPS, working first as a rail mail sorter and then in the Omaha regional sorting facility. He retired from the post office in 1986. An active member of Broadway United Methodist, he also enjoyed gardening, square dancing and traveling. In 2004, Ralph received a lifetime membership in Kiwanis. He was a proud member of the first SW Iowa Honor Flight to see the WWII memorial in Washington D.C., in 2008. Ralph moved to Bethany Heights Senior Living Center in 2009, and enjoyed the many activities and friends he made there. Ralph was preceded in death by his wife, Margery (Lofquist); both his parents; his brother, Merle; and sisters, Inabelle and Phyllis; as well as 3 brothers-in-law. He is survived by his 4 children, Gloria Adams and her husband, Garth, of Merrimack, N.H., Gary Bean and his son, David, of Raleigh N.C., Greg and his wife, Sally, of Fayetteville, N.C., their daughter, Melanie Barber and her husband, Greg, of Henderson, Nev., and Angela Wisco and her husband, Chad, and their daughters, Allison, Natalie and Valerie, of Sioux City, Iowa. In addition he is survived by his sisters-in-law, Ruth Bean and June Lofquist, of Albert City, Iowa, Rosalie Day, of Loveland, Colo.; brother and sister-in-law, Loren and Joyce Lofquist, of Longmont, Colo.; and nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Visitation on Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Cutler-O'Neill-Meyer-Woodring Bayliss Park Chapel. Services will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012, 10 a.m., at Broadway UMC with Graveside Services at 4 p.m., in Laurens, Iowa.
