He was taken to the hospital a few days previously after suffering a heart attack. Ralph Victor Starks was born in Norton county, Kansas, December 3, 1882, the youngest of four children of Warren and Ida Starks. He attended school in Kansas until the age of 13, when he went to work to support his mother and sister, who at that time were the only surviving members of his family. He began working for the Burlington railroad at the age of 15 as helper and telegrapher, and was made a station agent at Pauline, Neb., at the age of 19. He later worked as relief or supply agent on the Lincoln Division of the Burlington and for three and one-half years worked as night operator, day operator, ticket clerk, cashier and agent at more than sixty different places in Nebraska, including the depot and city ticket offices in Lincoln and Omaha. October 31, 1906, Mr. Starks came to Fairmont as agent of the C.B.&Q. and remained in that capacity until retirement January 1, 1948. He maintained his home with his wife in Fairmont until his death. For years the Fairmont depot was a very busy place with several trains daily on two branch lines as well as the main line. Operators were on duty 24 hours a day. Mr. Starks handled his duties capably and was courteous and kindly to the many people who traveled by train in those days. Mr. Starks was a steadfast member of the church throughout his life, and always tried to live by its teachings. He served in almost every capacity and office in the Congregational, and later, the Federated church. He has been a member of the school board, the library board, and officer of the I.O.O.F. and chairman of the Red Cross in Fairmont. Mr. Starks was married to Theresa Weeth of Gretna June 15, 1915. Surviving are the widow and four children; Dr. Milan Starks of Seattle, Wash., Marjorie Brown of Salina, Kas., Mildred Dean of Grant, Neb., and Margaret Lewis of Menlo Park, Cal., and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Federated church at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, August 13. Rev. I.C.G. Campbell officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. A.P. Stewart, organist. Serving as pallbearers were Willard Goodrich, A.P. Stewart, John Murrell, Claude Lefler, George White and Harold Kruse. Interment was in the Fairmont cemetery.
