Son of George and Rachel Conrad OBITUARY THE CHARITON HERALD-PATRIOT Chariton, Iowa Thursday, July 2, 1925 DOUBLE FUNERAL SERVICES LAST RITES for BARTLETT and MARIA CONRAD HELD JUNE 24 Ransom Bartlett Conrad, son of George and Rachel Conrad, was born at Oswego, New York, on January 9, 1833, and died June 22, 1925, at the advanced age of 92 years, 5 months and 15 days. Having spent his early youth in the town of Paris, Canada, he moved to Burlington, Iowa in 1856. His wife, Maria Canterbury, was born at Middletown, Des Moines county, Iowa, on the 30th day of November, 1839, and died at her home in Norwood, December 31, 1924, having lived 85 years, 1 month and 1 day. They were married at Middletown, Iowa on March 4, 1857, and moved to Mahaska county, near Pella. To them four children were born, Katie, who died in infancy, John Fitch, whose residence is in Des Moines, Emma, wife of John Gray, who died at the home of her parents May 7, 1915, and Fred C., to whom was entrusted the care of his aged parents. In 1865, when Iowa was a vast unfenced prairie, roadless and having few inhabitants, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad came with their family to help settle the vicinity of Norwood, they being among the first families to migrate to this place. Here they continued to occupy their place in the community life until their union was broken by the death of Mrs. Conrad. In March, 1925, they would have been married for 68 years. In 1868, both Mr. and Mrs. Conrad joined the M. E. church and from that time were consistent members. Besides the two sons, J. F. and Fred C., there remain 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Knowing that one could not long survive the other it was the wish of the deceased that services be held for both at the death of the latter one, hence, on Wednesday, June 24, combined funeral services were conducted by the Reverand J. D. Pontius, pastor of the Christian church of Chariton, and the body of Mr. Conrad was laid beside that of his wife in the Norwood cemetery. In the passing of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad, Lucas county loses two of its oldest and most influential pioneers. Mrs. Conrad was a devoted mother and a conscientious friend, always ready to help those in need. Mr. Conrad was, for the last 50 years, a member of the Masonic lodge and, while Ottercreek township was still in its primitive state and petty trials were numerous, he served as Justice of the Peace for 25 years.
