Read More	The Sterling Semi-Weekly Sun Friday, June 7, 1901 After an illness of two years or more, R. D. Swallow, an old and respected resident of this community passed away, Tuesday morning, June 4, 1901, age 67 years, 7 months and 21 days. Mr. Swallow had not made a public confession of Christianity until on his sick bed when he made his confession to Rev. R. Richards that if the Lord would permit him strength once more to get to the church he would be immersed and unite with the church, but that privilege was not granted him. But from his confession we trust and believe that he is now united with the Christ triumphant. Mr. Swallow's illness dates back to a cancerous growth which necessitated the removal of one eye, and since that time, nearly two years ago as we remember it, he has been a constant sufferer. The best medical and surgical skill, have been unavailing in his behalf, and he continued to suffer and gradually grew worse until death relieved him. The deceased was an unassuming, and in every way an estimable citizen, and was held in the highest esteem by every one who knew him. He was born at Pittston, Pennsylvania, November 13th, 1833. He was educated at Kingston Academy, and came to Nebraska as a surveyor in 1858. Later he went to Illinois and served during the war, in the 69th, Ill Vol. Inf't. After the war he engaged in agricultural pursuit, and in 1871 came to Nebraska and settled on a homestead in this precinct, a few miles northwest of Sterling, where he continued to reside until he moved to his farm at the northwest corner of town, where he died. In 1862 he was married to Anna B. Carnahan, who survives him. To them were born six children, three of whom still survive to mourn with the bereaved widow, the death of a kind and indulgent father and husband. The Sun joins with their many neighbors and friends in extending sympathy in their great sorrow. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Richards, pastor of the Baptist church of this city, yesterday afternoon from the family residence, and the remains were laid to rest in the Sterling cemetery.
