Description	:	Obituary: Rathje Martens died Thursday morning about 3 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Koll, west of town from a stroke of apoplexy. The funeral was held at the Koll residence Saturday morning, June 11, 1910, at ten o'clock, Rev. Lindemeyer of Council Bluffs officiating: Rathje Martens was born in Germany in Lutjenwested Kreis Rensburg 1831, March 16. He was with his family, came to the United States in 1885, and settled in Davenport, where they resided two years. The funeral was held at the Koll residence Saturday morning, June 11, 1910, at ten o'clock, Rev. Lindemeyer of Council Bluffs officiating: Rathje Martens was born in Germany in Lutjenwested Kreis Rensburg 1831, March 16. He was with his family, came to the United States in 1885, and settled in Davenport, where they resided two years. In 1887 he came to Persia, and went on the farm west of Persia, where he has lived ever since. He was united in marriage in 1858 to Margareta Martens, who went to rest before him, six years ago. To this union were born eight children, four boys and one girl of whom are still living. Hartwig, George, Marcus and Henry Martens, and Mrs. Maria Koll, all residing in and near Persia. These, together with sixteen grand children, and a brother in Germany, remain to mourn his sudden departure. Deceased was a strong an influential member of the German Lutheran Church, and was highly esteemed and loved by all his acquaintances. A large concourse of friends gathered at his late home to pay their last tributes to their departed friend and neighbor, many following the remains to their final resting place in Valley View Cemetery.
