Born in Union, South Carolina, on September 21, 1918, a son of the late William Walker and Josie (Rochester) Black. Mr. Black graduated from Wofford College, retired from Timken Company, and was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Gaffney, South Carolina where he had lived for many decades. Mr. Black was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II. Mr. Black was predeceased by three sisters: Sis Black, Sarah Nell Black, and Mary Coleen (Black) Davis; seven brothers: Claude Walker Black, Charles Noah Black, William Edward Allen "Ed" Black, Frank Wilson Black, Ralph Dempsey Black, Dewey Lee Black, and Louis Jackson "Louise" Black; and a great-grandson: Grant. Mr. Black was survived by three sons: Raymond Black and wife, Mary, of Jacksonville, Florida; Sandy Black and wife, Mary, of Titusville, Florida, and Boyd Black and wife, Cheryl, of Camden, South Carolina; five grandchildren (four by birth, one by marriage): Teresa, Kenny, Susan, Shannon, and Johnnie; three great-grandchildren; a sister: Virginia (Black) Carter and husband, Theron, of Union, South Carolina; and a brother, Dwight Gene "Dean" Black and wife, Mavis, of Apple Valley, California. Funeral services were held at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, January 3, 2007, with the Reverend Robert Emory officiating. Burial followed in the Fairforest Baptist Church Cemetery (Duck Pond), of Union, South Carolina, with military honors.
