Read More	Mapleton Press 26 January 1978 Services Held For Former Smithland Mayor January 23 Ray Wallace Griffith, the son of Wallace and Ella Griffith, former mayor of Smithland, was born November 28, 1892 near Anthon. He died January 20, 1978 at a Sioux City nursing home having reached the age of 85 years and two months. He moved to Rodney in 1913 and operated a store there with family members until 1914 when the store was moved to Oto. On July 20, 1915 he married Cora Smith at Dakota City, Nebraska. He attended barber school in Sioux City and the couple lived in Plankinton, South Dakota for one year before moving to Smithland in 1916. He was a barber in Smithland for more than 50 years. He had served on the school board and town council and was mayor. He was a volunteer fireman and manager of the Smithland ball team. He was a member of the Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Amicable Lodge 289, A.F. & A.M. He was a district lecturer for the Masonic Lodge for many years. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 23, 1978 in the Smithland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dale Church officiating. Burial was in the Smithland Cemetery. Masonic services were held at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 23, 1978 at the Willman Funeral Home in Rodney with Joe Jessen as speaker. Pallbearers were Albert Conyers, Dennis Parsley, Gene Kelsey, Wilfred Uhl, Louis Gallup and James McDonald. Survivors include the widow, Cora; a son, James of Lake Andes, South Dakota; two daughters, Mrs. Milray Harms of Newport Beach, California and Mrs. Vicki Lovelace of South Pasadena, California; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren
