He was born November 29, 1923 in Alberta, Minnesota to Fred and Ora Fay Jackson Young. He married Mary M. Schmitz August 11, 1948. Young, 82, of 827 S. Ward, died at 9:50 p.m. July 29, 2006 at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center. He was born November 29, 1923 in Alberta, Minnesota to Fred and Ora Fay Jackson Young. He married Mary M. Schmitz August 11, 1948. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 738th Tank Battalion. He was a lifelong truck driver & teamster, retiring in 1981 with Bruce Mid-America. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, served on the advisory board of Indian Hills Community College, the SIEDA board, was involved with the Senior Citizens Center, the Wapello County Area Agency on Aging, was active in the Democratic Party and helped with the Working Man?s Christmas Party. He was a life member of Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of O.B. Nelson Post No. 3 American Legion. He was a loving, caring person, helping many people. Surviving is his wife; a son, Jeffery Young of Ottumwa; a daughter, Marita (Dale) Chapman of New Sweden, Maine; a granddaughter Megan Ingels; 3 sisters, Gretna Vest of Clinton, Marjorie Cullinan and Connie Rusbult, both of Ottumwa; 2 brothers, Earl Young of Ottumwa and Robert Young of Vandalia, Illinois. He is preceded in death by his parents and 4 brothers, Clayton, Maurice, Charles and Dale Young. His body has been cremated. Funeral mass will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. John Spiegel officiating. Inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Reece Funeral Home with a Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
