Ray was born on August 2, 1922, in Bremer County, Iowa, the third son of Frank and Sarah (Koenig) Lageschulte. Read More	son of Frank & Sarah Koenig Lageschulte Raymond Arthur "Ray" Lageschulte, 85, of Waverly, Iowa, died Saturday afternoon, September 1, 2007, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly. Ray was born on August 2, 1922, in Bremer County, Iowa, the third son of Frank and Sarah (Koenig) Lageschulte. Ray attended rural school at Warren No. 2 and graduated from the Waverly High School in 1941. He was active in both 4-H and FFA. On November 3, 1945, he was united in marriage to Virginia Dorothy Koefoed at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Ray and Virginia started farming on the home farm which they purchased in 1951. From 1974 until 1992, Ray served as Representative in the State of Iowa House of Representatives. Ray was known as a maverick representative. He once said, "I was elected to represent all of the people in my district, not just those in my party." He served on the State Government Transportation Ways and Means and was Chair of State Department Appropriations Subcommittee. He was Iowa (TM)s representative on the National Government Board of the Council of State Governments for several years. Besides farming, Ray worked as a crop and cattle insurance adjuster for Farm Bureau for 20 years (1970-1996). When Ray retired he was Assistant Supervisor for the Northeast Iowa District. In 1981, Ray and Virginia moved into Waverly making their home at 106 Willow Circle. Following his retirement from the legislature in 1992, the couple spent the winter months in Arizona. They traveled to 49 of the 50 states and to numerous foreign countries. Virginia died on June 1, 2000, and Ray continued to live in his home until he became a resident of the Eichhorn House and later the Linden Place. Ray was a board member of the Warren Methodist Church and later joined Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. He served on the Bremer County Farm Bureau Board as Director, President and Voting Delegate. He also served on the Bremer Coop Creamery Board, Bremer County Fair Board and Bremer County Board of Adjustment. He was also chairman of the Agriculture Committee of the Waverly Chamber of Commerce. Ray is survived by one son, David Lageschulte of Ft. Myers, Florida; three daughters; Donna (Kenneth) Speake of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Cordell Lageschulte of Verona, Wisconsin, Teri Edman of Madison, Wisconsin, and his special friend, Bonnie Schultz of Payson, Arizona. Ray is also survived by 7 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and one sister, Gladys Sanders of Oelwein, Iowa. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Virginia and two brothers, Clarence and Lavern Lageschulte. Services will be held on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly with Pastor Tony Nester Presiding and Pastor Keith Tomlinson reading scripture. Burial will be held in Harlington Cemetery in Waverly. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home in Waverly and an hour prior to services on Thursday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Lageschulte family to establish a scholarship fund.
