Description	:	Ray Cunningham, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. He was born April 29, 1924 at Long Beach, California, the son of Raymond Franklin and Georgia Burch Cunningham. He graduated from the Keosauqua (IA) High School with the class of 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was on a Navy destroyer based out of New Orleans, and later on a Navy Bomber at the Port of Spain at Trinidad. Read More	Ray Cunningham, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Saturday, February 7, 2009, at the Pella Regional Health Center in Pella. He was born April 29, 1924 at Long Beach, California, the son of Raymond Franklin and Georgia Burch Cunningham. He graduated from the Keosauqua (IA) High School with the class of 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, and was on a Navy destroyer based out of New Orleans, and later on a Navy Bomber at the Port of Spain at Trinidad. He was discharged in 1946 as a Chief Operations Officer. Ray was married to Lena Nora Harrington on March 13, 1946, and later divorced. They lived in Des Moines before moving to Oskaloosa in August of 1947. In the spring of 1948, Ray and Lena took Lena's niece Barbara into their home following the death of her mother, and raised her as their own. In 1947, Ray began working for Morris Johnston and buying into Johnston Auto Parts in Oskaloosa, and in 1955 he bought Morris out and ran Ray's Auto Parts until 1965. On January 25, 1974, he was united in marriage to Evelyn Van Ommen Kelderman at Oskaloosa, and she died February 27, 1997. He started R&R Excavating and operated that business from 1962 – 1982. In 1982, Ray and Evelyn started buying houses and repairing them to re-sell. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, watching birds, attending grandchildren's events, woodworking, and golfing. He and Evelyn also enjoyed doing mission work and going on mission trips. His family includes his two daughters and their husbands, Sandy and Scott Hildebrand and Barbara "Bobbi" and George Lind, all of Oskaloosa; two step daughters: Jana (& Jerry) Foley of Johnston and Carole Kelderman of Oskaloosa; a step son: Mark (& Shawn) Kelderman of Brownsville, Wisconsin; 13 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister: MaryAnn (& E.L.) Hutchison of Durango, Colorado; a step sister: Kathleen (& Ray) Perry of Florida; and four nieces and a nephew.
