He was one of nine boys and two girls born to Blanche Wright and Ewing Wright. Raymond, known to family and friends as Red or Dean, grew up on a farm and worked at various jobs before marrying his wife Phyllis E.(Whitman*) Wright. Dean and Phyllis E. Whitman were married in Savannah, Missouri, on June 14, 1942. Dean entered the U.S. Army on December 16, 1942 where he became a tank driver and mechanic in the 14th Armored Division. During… his time in the Army, their first son Raymond Dean Wright Jr. was born. Dean continued his training, eventually rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant before he was shipped out to the European Theater, landing in Marseille, France on October 29, 1944. His most notable action during the war was in the Battle of the Bulge where his unit was attached to General Paton's Third Army, was awarded two Presidential Unit Citations, and was officially named "The Liberators" after freeing 130,000 Allied POWs from Stalag VII-A and thousands of Polish, Russian and Jewish prisoners from Dachau sub camps in southern Germany. After the war, Dean stayed in contact with his army buddies and attended several Division reunions. He returned from the service in December of 1945, and he and Phyllis had their second son David in 1946. In 1950,they began farming near Panora and later purchased a farm north of Wichita. Nearing retirement age, he and Phyllis moved to a smaller farm west of Guthrie Center. The pond they built was the site of many fine days of fishing for family and friends. Some of the grandchildren's fondest memories are of pulling blue gill and catfish out of the pond and having them for dinner that same evening. Dean was elected as a County Supervisor in 1972 and represented the County on numerous regional committees. He also served as a volunteer in many capacities, including founding board member of the Guthrie Center Community Center, 4-H leader, rural school board director and food pantry volunteer. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Guthrie Center for 70 years. He had a fine voice and sang in the church choir. One of his favorite activities was playing the harmonica with a small group that entertained at dances, nursing homes, birthdays and anniversaries. Dean loved being around people and he and Phyllis enjoyed many dances and musical events. He was an excellent mechanic and loved tinkering. His repairs were never elegant but they always worked. Before and during his marriage, he was an avid baseball and fast pitch softball pitcher. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan and agonized over the most recent World Series! Above all he loved his family. Dean was preceded in death by Phyllis, his lifelong love of 64 years, his parents, and nine siblings. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law Ray and Ronna of Council Bluffs, and David and Ann of Asheville, North Carolina, grandchildren Bethannie Dolnicek (John) of Lawrence, Nebraska, Christopher Wright of Sioux City, Matthew Wright of Arlington, Virginia, Megan Wright Sinnett (Ben) of Greer, South Carolina, and great grandson, Micah Dolnicek. Also surviving is his brother Rolland (Cheryl) who lives in Arizona.
