He was born Aug. 3, 1941, in Decorah, Iowa, and was the son of Raymond A. and Adeline Mikesh, who owned the famous restaurant, The Sugar Bowl, in Decorah. Mikesh, 66, died on May 10, 2008, at the Chosen Valley Care Center in Chatfield, of pancreatic cancer. He was born Aug. 3, 1941, in Decorah, Iowa, and was the son of Raymond A. and Adeline Mikesh, who owned the famous restaurant, The Sugar Bowl, in Decorah. They served the best Bohemian hamburgers and malts anywhere. Ray was affectionately nicknamed "The Great One" by friends because of his Jackie Gleason antics and Jackie only rode trains. Ray and his wife, Barb, traveled over 300,000 miles by rail (sometimes 30,000 miles at a time) through several trips to Europe, Canadian VIA Rail, and Amtrak in the USA. If you ever need to talk to him, you'll find him in the next train whistle that you hear. Ray also was a river rat on the Mississippi River, had a slip at the Lake City Marina for 33 years and spent his summer residing on his boat. "The MIRAKESH." He was one with nature and when others would run for cover during storms, he sat outside on his boat deck and enjoyed Mother Nature's fury. Ray's education consisted of a B.A. in Theater and Speech from the University of Northern Iowa in 1964, an M.A. in Scenery Design from St. Cloud State University in 1967, and an M.F.A. in Acting from Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., in 1969, where he trained in Shakespearean acting under Morris Carnovsky. He has played over 150 roles as an actor portraying characters ranging from traditional drama and comedy to Moliere and the classics. He performed with the professional Tacoma Actor's Guild in Tacoma, Wash., as Lee in Sam Shepherd's "True West" to Stanley in "Streetcar Named Desire," at the Joliet Playhouse in Joliet, Ill. He was involved with the Rochester REP and the Rochester Civic Theatre and several summer stock companies, including Theatre L'Homme Dieu in Alexandria, MN. He discovered while training to be a professional actor that the unemployment rate for working actors was 98% and decided to become a teacher. He enjoyed a 33-year teaching career at Rochester Community & Technical College as Technical Director for the Theatre Department (then RCC), building scenery, and in 1981 became Director of Theatre. He loved working withthe students. He was an animated saxophone player in a Rock & Roll band called the Ravens for six years in high school and college, with a successful tour throughout the Midwest and was a Technical Director for Summerthing in Boston, Mass., for two summers, setting up staging and lighting in neighborhoods throughout the city where groups ranging from the Boston Ballet, Arthur Feidler and the Boston Pops to Bo Diddley, Jimi Hendrix and the late, great James Brown, to local musicians performed. Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara (Schultz) Mikesh & her family; brother Marv Mikesh & wife, Carol, of Rochester; nephew, Mark Mikesh & family of Rochester; Niece, Jean Vale & family of Hokah, MN; niece, Ann Mikesh & family of Rochester; brother, Don Zahasky & wife, Louise, of Decorah, Iowa, & their large families. All beautiful people. Ray experienced a full life in all aspects and had inscribed on his headstone in Decorah: "We Had Fun And Away We Go!!!" A visitation to celebrate Ray's life will be held on Tuesday, May 13, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Riley Funeral Home in Chatfield. Burial will be in Phelps Cemetery in Decorah at a later date. Memorials are requested to the RCTC Scholarship Fund.
