Cox, Jr. "Ray" passed away on April 4, 2010. He was surrounded by his family. Ray was born April 28, 1927 in East Flat Rock, North Carolina to Raymond Cox and Louise Cox. He was the oldest of five children. At the age of 17 during World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After training he went to Europe where he eventually became part of the occupation forces in Germany. Upon return home, he moved to Charleston, South Carolina where he later met Sallie Martin of Holly Hill, South Carolina. They were married in 1947. There was one child of their marriage, Larry Cox. Ray was passionate about his work as a carpenter and home builder. Everyone knew him as a worker. His peers often referred to him as "Doctor Cox" because of his expertise in building and ability to work out unusual building problems. He was an avid "quail hunter" in his early years. In his later years his favorite hobbies were building furniture and gospel music. In 2005, Ray and Sallie moved to Bakersfield to be close to family, giving up the charm and beach of Charleston, South Carolina and the nearby beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the place of his birth. Ray is preceded in death by Sallie, his wife of 59 years. He is survived by his son, Larry Cox and daughter-in-law Joan Cox of Bakersfield, CA. Additionally, he has his three special grandchildren, Katy Cox, Adam Cox and Andrew Cox, who brought great joy into his life. As to his family back home, Ray is survived by his sisters, Rosie Miller, Willie Perry and his brother, John Cox. Ray was a special leader to his family, always by example demonstrating his motto "you have to be a friend to have a friend." The family is especially thankful to his physicians David Dougherty, MD, James Grimes, MD and Richard Alexan, MD. The family is also especially thankful to The Park, an assisted living facility where Ray spent his last nine months. There will be a private casket viewing at Hillcrest Mortuary on Sunday, April 11, 2010 from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. There will be a graveside service open to the public at Hillcrest Memorial Park on April 12, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. www.bakersfield.com/obits Published in Bakersfield Californian on April 9, 2010
