Gravning, son of Sam and Geneva (Bruflat) Gravning, was born July 7, 1920 in Estelline, SD. He received his education in Estelline and later in Sioux Falls, SD after moving there with his family. Ray then worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills. Ray entered the U.S. Marine Corps on December 27, 1941 in Minneapolis, MN. He served in Okinawa and Guam during WWII. Ray was united in marriage with Marjorie Gravning on June 16, 1944 in Los Angeles, CA. Following his honorable discharge with the rank of Corporal on December 29, 1945 in San Diego, CA, the couple made their home and raised their family in Sioux Falls. Ray worked as a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years before retiring in 1983. A skilled carpenter and brick layer, he built several houses for his family over the years. Ray enjoyed spending time with the family at their cabin on Lake Poinsett. He was also a self-taught golfer and enjoyed countless rounds of golf with his friends. Ray was a long-time member of East Side Lutheran Church. In addition, he was a member of V.F.W. Post 628, American Legion Post 15 and Moose Lodge 503. Grateful for having shared his life are two children, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, three siblings, and a host of other relatives and friends. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, on May 25, 2011; his parents; two brothers, Leo and Jim; and two sisters, Betty and Maxine.
