Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The Celebrant will be Fr. Timothy Schott. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Auburn with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion. Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 6 p.m. on Tuesday where there will be a Christian Wake Service by St. Lawrence Parish at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday where visitation will resume until time of the funeral mass. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll. Ray was born on June 12, 1921 in Auburn, Iowa, a son of Edward and Elizabeth (Skalla) Heim. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1938. After high school, he worked for his Uncle Clarence Heim and also worked with his father in the trucking business. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942 and proudly served for 22 years on board the USS Pine Island, USS Hancock as well as at Panama, Corpus Christi, TX, Federal Office Building in San Francisco, CA, San Diego, CA, Ford Island, Hawaii, Des Moines, IA and Moffett Field, CA where he served as the Admiral’s writer. While in the Navy, he married Jean Iler on May 25, 1945 in Corpus Christi, TX. To this union was born six children. After retiring from the military in 1966, Ray worked at Ford Motor Company in Milpitas, CA and retired from there in 1980 when he relocated to Carroll, IA. During his Navy career, Ray enjoyed playing tennis and bowling and later, in retirement, he loved playing golf and cards with his friends and family as well as traveling. He was very proud that he had three holes-in-one playing golf. One of his favorite things in later life, were his visits to the casino with Jean. Ray was a very devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of St. Lawrence parish and had extremely deep faith. Ray was also a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the Carroll American Legion. Survivors include: his wife, Jean, of Carroll; four sons, John (Sue) Heim, Tom (Lavenia) Heim, Mike Heim, Dan Heim; one daughter, Jane (Todd) Roberts; 12 granddaughters, Cathy Heim, Heather (Mark) Cwynar, Lisa Gallagher, Misty (Joe) Capp, Michelle (Jeff) Corallo, Kendall Heim, Eden Heim, Rae Heim, Delaney Heim, and Sarah, Natalie and Erin Roberts; one grandson, Ben Heim; four great-grandchildren, Camille & Kyle Cwynar, Savannah Corallo and Brendan Gallagher; one sister, Evelyn Wolterman; four sister-in-laws: Esther Heim, Lola Heim, Sandra Heim, and Bonnie Ricke; one brother-in-law, Bob (Rose Marie) Iler; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert; five brothers, Leo, Harold, Marvin, Cletus, and Paul; two sisters, Bernice and Louise.
