Apparently having fallen off the Chicago Great Western railroad bridge over the Cedar river during the night. Raymond Stevick, 51 year old world war veteran, was found dead in shallow water below the bridge at 11:10a.m. Saturday. Dr. Sidney D. Smith, Black Hawk county coroner, pronounced death accidental and said there would be no inquest. Raymond Stevick, 51 year old world war veteran, was found dead in shallow water below the bridge at 11:10a.m. Saturday. Dr. Sidney D. Smith, Black Hawk county coroner, pronounced death accidental and said there would be no inquest. He believed that Stevick walking across the bridge, had crawled thru an opening in the bridge railing, possibly to get out of the way of an approaching train, and slipped off the edge of the concrete pier. A cap, believed to have been Stevick's was found on the top of the pier. Identification of the bodyt was made originally thru a laundry mark on the collar band of his shirt, merely the name, "Stevick". Policemen who had known Raymond Stevick tentatively identified the body as it lay in the O'Keefe & Towne funeral home, and it was also recognized by other men who had known Stevick. Served in France. As a private in the Eighty-fifth division of the United States Army during the world war. Stevick fought in France in the battles of the Argonne and Chateau-Thierry. He was gassed and suffered wounds of the left hand and left foot. Born Feb 6, 1890, at Council Bluffs, Ia. he was enlisted into the army in Waterloo Sept. 18, 1917, and discharged at Camp Doge, Ia. April 24, 1919. After the way he worked for a time for the Railway Express agency here. He entered the Iowa Soldiers' home at Marshalltown June 12, at which time he gave his address as 226 Lafayette building. Waterloo. He was discharged from the home March 11, 1940. Recently he had been staying at the home of a son, Robert, 519 1/2 West Ninth street. Discovered by Engineer. First to see the body in the river, just below the third pier from the east end of the bridge, was P.V. Hart, engineer of a Chicago Great Western switch engine. He notified the police department, which relayed the information to the fire department. The fire department's river rescue squad went out in it's rowboat, and found the body lying on rocks in about a foot of water. Rigor mortis had set in, indicating he had been dead for several hours. Wearing pin-striped overalls and a blue shirt, open at the neck, Stevick had in his pockets two nickels, a bag of smoking tobacco, cigarette papers, a handkerchief, a jack-knife and a safety pin. Skull Fractured: Coroner Smith found the skull to be fractured. There was a severe bruise on the right temple suggesting that Stevick had fallen head first onto the base of the pier. There were also bruises, not severe enough to break the skin and cause bleeding on the left side of the small of the back and on the right hip, possibly incurred when the body toppled from the pier base into the rocky river bottom. There was no indication that the man had been struck by a train, the coroner said. Left House at 6:30. The son of the victim said last night his father left home about 6:30 p.m. Friday and had been seen sometime later downtown. He said he believed the father had taken a short cut home in late evening, by way of the railroad bridge. Surviving in addition to the son, are the victims mother. Mrs Vera Stevick, Council Bluffs, Ia: two sisters at Council Bluffs and his ex-wife whose whereabouts were not known last night. Copied from the Waterloo Sunday Courier, 4 May 1941.
