Description	:	Raymond Herman Duerk, 87, of Coldwater, Michigan, formerly of Defiance, Ohio, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. Mr. Duerk was a carpenter, working at Tenzer Lumber, Stock Construction, Skelly Oil and Wolfrum Builders, as well as being self-employed in construction. He attended St. John's Lutheran School and Defiance High School. He served as a sergeant with the 13th Air Force Engineers during World War II in the South Pacific, and earned several ribbons and two battle stars. Read More	Raymond Herman Duerk, 87, of Coldwater, Michigan, formerly of Defiance, Ohio, died Sunday, April 20, 2008, at the Community Health Center of Branch County in Coldwater. Mr. Duerk was a carpenter, working at Tenzer Lumber, Stock Construction, Skelly Oil and Wolfrum Builders, as well as being self-employed in construction. He attended St. John's Lutheran School and Defiance High School. He served as a sergeant with the 13th Air Force Engineers during World War II in the South Pacific, and earned several ribbons and two battle stars. He was a 57-year member of Clear Lake Lutheran Church where he served on many committees, and was president of the congregation for two terms. He served on the Summer Association board of directors and co-chaired the remodeling of the church he so loved in the 1970's. He was a life member of V.F.W. Post No. 3360, and American Legion Post No. 117, both in Defiance, Ohio. He was interested in growing flowers and singing barbershop. Ray's bass voice and the love for barbershop will sing on. He will always be remembered for his "Valentine Candy" and the beautiful flowers he grew at the lake. Health problems and a car accident in Florida slowed him down. He was born May 17, 1920, in Defiance, to Herman and Clara (Ludwig) Duerk. He married D. Helen Schliesser on Nov. 20, 1940. She survives in Coldwater. He is also survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Lou and (Tom) Towers of Crossville, Tenn., and JoAnne Holman of Van Wert, Ohio; five grandchildren and three spouses, Wendy Towers, David and (Kathy) Towers, Dean Towers, Carole and (Trent) Motycka, and Kris and (Matt) Dunlap; and nine great-grandchildren, Marissa and Leanne Branam, Jon and Joe Lisa, Nick and Drew Motycka, Madeline Towers, Joe Towers and Jackson Dunlap. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Wolfrum and Ruth Roehrs; a son-in-law, John C. Rush; and a great-grandson, David K. Towers. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday April 23, 2008 at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, IN. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday April 24, 2008 at Clear Lake Lutheran Church at Clear Lake, Fremont, IN,, with the Rev. Mark Gaertner officiating. Burial will be in Clear Lake Lutheran Cemetery, with military committal services by the Fremont American Legion. Memorials are to Clear Lake Lutheran Church.
