Description	:	August 29, 1918 - June 9, 2013 Raymond J Weber, 94, of Morro Bay, CA, formerly of Sioux Falls, died, with family members at his side, at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Maryland on Sunday, June 9, 2013, after a brief illness. Ray was born August 29, 1918 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and attended Cathedral School. He shared his childhood with eight siblings. Read More	August 29, 1918 - June 9, 2013 Raymond J Weber, 94, of Morro Bay, CA, formerly of Sioux Falls, died, with family members at his side, at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Maryland on Sunday, June 9, 2013, after a brief illness. Ray was born August 29, 1918 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and attended Cathedral School. He shared his childhood with eight siblings. Ray met his future wife, Avis Joens, at the Arkota Ballroom in Sioux Falls in 1941. They both loved dancing, their romance flourished and they were married at Fort Benning, GA on June 11, 1943. Ray entered the Army in 1942, completed his basic and advance infantry training at Fort Leavenworth, KS. In 1943, he performed guard duty on the California coast. He then volunteered for paratrooper training at Fort Benning, GA. Following graduation from jump school, Ray was asked to stay on as an instructor. After two years as an instructor, he was shipped overseas in August, 1944 with the 17th Airborne Division, 513 Parachute Infantry Regiment, Company E. He entered the Battle of the Bulge on December 24, 1944. Ray fought in extreme weather conditions and was taken prisoner by German soldiers on January 9, 1945. Ray survived 3 1/2 months at Stalag 9A and 12 B prison camps as well as being confined in cattle cars on numerous occasions. He was liberated by the 99th Infantry Division the 3rd week of April 1945. During this time, he lost 51 pounds and suffered from numerous afflictions. He recovered at a Paris Hospital for three months and then was flown to Schick Army Hospital in Clinton, Iowa for three additional months before being reunited with his family in August, 1945. He was especially proud of his military service as a paratrooper. Ray was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and several other Army commendations. Ray flew to the DC area with the Kern Country CA Honor Flight group on May 31. He suffered a brief illness, was hospitalized and died June 9, 2013. Although Ray was unable to visit the WWII Memorial and the nation’s capital, it was brought to him. He was honored to receive the American flag that flew over our nation’s Capital on June 6, 2013. Kern County Honor Flight Association and Congressman Kevin McCarthy,23rd District, California, along with his staff, especially Senior Staff Assistant George Caram, were instrumental in honoring Ray for his service. Ray and Avis raised their eight children in Sioux Falls where Ray worked at Metz Baking Company. He was proud to be a very active union steward. After their retirement, they moved to Morro Bay, CA in March 1981. Survivors include his children and spouses, Larry Weber, Montrose, SD, Robert Weber, Morro Bay, CA, Don and Michele Weber, Anaheim, CA, Jeff and Susie Weber, Sioux Falls, SD, Michael Weber, Omaha NE, Nancy Weber, Yorba Linda, CA , Mark Weber, Kirkland, WA and daughter-in-law, Ann Weber Lang, Naples, FL. Survivors also include nineteen grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren, a sister Loretta and Si Snelling, Denver, CO, a brother Len and Carol Weber, Sioux Falls. Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Avis, a son, Gregory, a grandson, Gregory Weber Lang Jr., daughter-in-law, Ann Weber, two brothers and four sisters. Ray was a loving husband, a caring father, a joyful grandfather and great-grandfather and a friend to many. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Kern County Honor Flight kerncountyhonorflight.org or St. Timothy Catholic Church, Morro Bay, CA sttimothymorrobay.org. • Visitation will be Sunday, June 16, beginning at 3:00 p.m. with the family present starting at 4:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue, Sioux Falls. • A scripture service will be at 6:00 p.m. followed by the rosary. • Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, June 17 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral with burial and military rites to follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Sioux Falls. • An additional memorial service is planned later in Morro Bay, CA.
