Description	:	PVT 507 AAF TNG CP WORLD WAR II Raymond Applegate, age 25, of Ripley, brother of Harlan and Edward Applegate and Mrs. Virgie Secrest, all of near Manchester, drowned in the Ohio River at South Ripley on Thursday afternoon of last week. He was associated with his brother, William Applegate in ferrying the mail from South Ripley to Ripley. He was associated with his brother, William Applegate in ferrying the mail from South Ripley to Ripley. He lost his life just a few feet from the ferry float where he had been taking a station agent just before the accident occurred. Arch Eveslage, the only witness, stated the victim was returning the mail to Ripley in a motorboat. As a towboat was passing the two men held the motorboat away from the float so that it would not be knocked against the side of the float. Mr. Eveslage stated the chain holding the boat slipped and as the man reached for it he fell into the river. Although the victim could not swim he managed to get within a few feet of the float just out of Eveslage's reach. Mr. Eveslage told him the water was shallow and to wade out when all of a sudden he started swimming towards the floating boat. His fingers barely touched the boat when he disappeared beneath the surface. The body was recovered in a short time by Robert Ross, of Ripley. The drowned man is survived by his widow, Mrs. Bessie Wallingford Applegate, and two sons, Raymond 3 and Ronnie 10 months; three brothers, and a sister, Mrs. Virgie Secrest, of Manchester and his father, Nelson Applegate, of Aberdeen.
