Description	:	Raymond L. Russell, 82, of Mitchell died Thursday October 14, 2010 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct 19, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Gary Cole officiating. Interment will follow at Mitchell Valley Cemetery. Ray was the eldest of four sons born to Thomas and Helen Stiver Russell (later Long). He was born Oct. 18, 1927 in Mitchell and was raised on farms in and around the Russell family farm in Mitchell valley. He attended country school and graduated from Mitchell High School. Ray entered the army in 1946 and served his two year term in South Korea following basic training. He pointed several times that he missed his birthday but got two New Year's eves crossing the dateline to and from the states. In Korea, he was fortunate to serve with best friends from home Hank Elias and Kenny Sato. After returning home Ray turned down a basketball college scholarship to work in and eventually buy an interest in the Phillips 66 station in Gering, which he ran with his partner Al Dorn until 1965. Following his grandmothers death in 1963, Ray and his wife Ruth bought the Russell family homestead in Mitchell valley and moved there in 1964. There on the farm Ray loved so much they raised their four children. Although it would be difficult to say which job Ray did best, he really excelled at the job of grandpa and great-grandpa to his six grandchildren and eight grand-children. Ray was always very active in public service including terms on the Gering and Mitchell valley school boards, the Scotts Bluff county Commission, the Gering-Fort Laramie ditch board and was a trustee for the First Baptist Church. He valued his many friends and stood by and appreciated his neighbors. Ray is survived by his wife Ruth, children Kathy Russell (Doug Stephens) of Douglas, Wyo., Karen Moore (Jack) of Prescott, Ariz., and Connie Goers (Mike) of Scottsdale, Ariz., and son Ron Russell (Wanda) of Torrington. Grandchildren Kate Painter, Keturah Lawton (Tim), Amy Painter, Lori Russell, Levi Painter (trisha), and Jim Russell (Amanda). He was preceded in death by his parents and twin brothers, Bill and Bob Russell, and a nephew, Rodney Russell. ###
