Read More	Raymond ‘Dicky' Dempsey Jr. LEWISBURG — Raymond Lawrence Dempsey Jr., Dicky as he was known to his friends, passed away on Sept. 20, 2011, at the Greenbrier Manor after a long illness. A lifelong resident of Lewisburg, he was born on May 17, 1930, at the home of his grandparents, James M. and Frances Flourney Preston, in Lewisburg. He lived with his grandparents after the death of his father. He was the son of Raymond Lawrence and Frances Preston Dempsey. He attended Lewisburg Elementary, Junior High and graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1948. He excelled in basketball and played on the football team while in high school. Dicky attended Roanoke National Business College. He worked for the Department of Highways before going in to the Army where he served in the Korean Conflict in the Artillery division. After his discharge from the Army he worked for the Greenbrier Independent Newspaper before going to work at Reynolds Oil Co. where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 2009. He was an avid reader and regularly studied the Bible. He was a lifetime member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church where he was ordained as a Deacon and an Elder. He served on several committees at the church and taught Senior High Sunday School as well as an adult Sunday School Class for over 35 years. He was a Trustee and Treasurer of the Lewisburg Cemetery and oversaw the day to day care taking of the cemetery. Dickey was also active in the community, being elected Jaycee of the Year in 1962. He liked helping other people and looked forward to a call from the Shepherd Center where he was a volunteer driver. Dicky was on the committee for the organization of the first Lewisburg High School All School reunion which began in 1993 and continued working on the next two All School Reunions. On February 19, 1951, he married the former Betty Joanne Sponaugle, his high school sweetheart. They have one daughter, the Rev. Joanne Dempsey Glaser of Beverly, W.Va., who is married to Timothy G. Glaser. Also surviving are one brother, Dr. John H. Dempsey of Morgantown, W.Va., and his wife, Sally; one half sister, Dr. Jean F. McClung of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three grandchildren, The Rev. Benjamin P. Glaser and wife, Brandy, of Ellisville, Miss., The Rev. Elizabeth G. Troyer and husband, Jeremy, of Kingsport, Tenn., Patricia G. Johnson and husband, Daniel, of Hubert, N.C. Three great-grandchildren, Lily, Mackenzie and Iain Raymond Glaser of Ellisville, Miss., and three nephews and one niece. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at the Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at the Old Stone Presbyterian Church in Lewisburg, with a reception to follow in the fellowship hall where the family will receive friends. Services will be officiated by the Rev. Dr. Dexter Taylor. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Shepherd Center, P.O. Box 54, Lewisburg, W.Va.
