"Raymond," to his family, was one of 11 children of James Hal Thomas and Anna Mae Thomas of Tullahoma, Tn. Ida and Tommy (his navy nickname) were a devoted couple whose relationship had a dramatic beginning. On weekend leave from his military base in Norfolk, Tommy and a friend took a bus to South Hill and then followed a sign to Pine Lake. While there, Tommy plunged in to save a young woman (Ida) floundering in deep water. After that, there was always room in the Allen's home and at their table for the rescuer of their daughter. In time, Tommy became their son-in-law. Tommy had many mechanical skills. For years he was in charge of all the air conditioning at Ft Belvoir Hospital in northern Virginia. In his retirement he rewired the entire campground in Kilmarnock. He was always willing to lend a hand and help a neighbor. For over 50 years, Ida and Tommy resided in a close knit community in Lorton. No one was a stranger for long to Ida. She loved to talk, to laugh and to interact with people. Their neighbors became like "family". Neighborhood women bonded in their weekly nights of playing canasta. Childless themselves, Ida and Tommy loved neighborhood children and sharing in holiday celebrations and milestones. They were godparents, cared for two elderly widows, and later for Ida's mother who lived with them in her final years. Tommy's passions were hunting, fishing and gardening. Ida also loved to fish and to freeze the garden produce for good country cooking throughout the year. In their retirement, the Thomases found beloved "country" in their campground in Kilmarnock, Virginia. There they spent summers enjoying the "family" that gathered there year after year. There they also found a family of faith and a pastor, tended a big garden, and fished in the river. Through business matters involving the Allen home place, visits to family and friends and of course the news in the South Hill Enterprise, the couple also kept in touch with South Hill. Ida and Tommy sowed good deeds and cared for others, when they battled cancer and as Ida struggled to remain independent for the last six months of her life, they reaped the loving care of their Lorton neighbors and friends. Neighbors and former neighbors shopped, cooked, raked leaves, and in the last months, did laundry, contacted caretakers interacted with the Hospice nurse, helped with final arrangements, and visited and encouraged daily. Raymond is survived by many nieces and nephews and by seven siblings: James W Thomas (Lucille), Nona Mae Beasley (Leroy), Douglas Thomas (Peggy), Charlotte Olson, (Larry), Paul Anthony Thomas (Sue), Brenda Riddle (James), and Linda Carr. Surviving sister-in-law and brother- in-law: Donna Thomas, widow of Dallan and Lester Jones widower of Alice. Richard Thomas and wife Mable both preceded Raymond in death. A memorial service for Ida and Tommy will be held on Saturday May 7 at 12 noon in South Hill, Virginia. Family and friends should gather at Crowder Hite Crews funeral home at 11:15 and proceed from there to the South Hill cemetery where the couple's ashes will be buried next to Ida's parents.
