Raymond Peter Hartung, son of Josephine E. (Schumacher) and Anton Hartung, was born June 3, 1926 at his parent's farm four miles west of Hoven. He attended St. Anthony's Parochial School in Hoven and also Hoven High School. Following his schooling, he helped his dad on the farm. Ray served his country in the United States Army, being inducted October 11, 1950. He was honorably discharged July 11, 1952 and returned to his parent's farm. In 1956 he began farming in partnership with his brother Art. Ray moved into Hoven in 1972. In 1980, he sold his half of the farm to Art, but continued helping on the farm and driving tractor until 1997. Ray is a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Hoven, the John J. Peter's American Legion Post No. 159, Hoven, and the Hoven Senior Center. Ray is survived by three brothers—Richard (Louise) Hartung of Hemet, CA, and Art (Loretta) Hartung and Leo (DeLoris) Hartung both of Hoven; and three sisters—Frances Ruzsa of Hoven, Bernice (Ken) Harty of Yankton, SD, and Evie (Bill) Mikuska of Tripp, SD. He was preceded in death by his father on April 23, 1980, his mother on June 15, 1994, and one brother (Bill). Honorary bearers will be Vince Beaner, Melvin Schumacher, Henry Kleinemas, and Jerry Hericks all of Hoven. Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.
