Description	:	U.S. Presbyterian missionary. While in college at Cedarville and the Univ. of Cincinnati, he developed severe inflammatory rheumatism. During this illness he received a vision, and upon recovering, he left the University and enrolled in Lane Theological Seminary. After graduation, he was refused by the Presbyterian Mission Board because of his pervasive viral weakness. Not to be deterred, he applied for a teaching position in the government schools in Japan, and within two weeks, was on his way to Japan. After two years residence in Japan he again applied to the Presbyterian Mission Board, and he was only accepted on the condition that if he broke down within five years, his return to the U.S. would be at his own expense. In April, 1905, he married Miss Mary Palmer in Yamaguchi. They quickly settled into their lone mission in Kyoto. He eventually succombed to the the illness that had broght him to Japan. At the time of his death, he had developed the mission from one to a staff of seven evangelists. His father, Fred Gorbold, died the same day in Ohio, in the United States, never knowing that his son was ill.
