Description	:	Raymond "Baby Ray" Ralph Fitzgerald, Jr., 68, of Beech Grove, passed away on Sunday August 20, 2017, after a long, brave fight with cancer. Baby Ray leaves behind his wife of 26 years, Susan Fitzgerald. Baby Ray leaves behind his wife of 26 years, Susan Fitzgerald. Baby Ray was very proud of his beloved family of Carol and Mike Staton, their children, Ryan and Ashley, Sandra and Gary Harris, their children, Sarah and Alyssa and Baby Ray's son, Steven. Baby Ray was the son of the late Raymond and Alice Fitzgerald, Sr. He leaves behind two sisters, Barbara Gormes (Billy) and Dorothy Ballowe (James) along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, David. Baby Ray grew up and lived a full life in Beech Grove and was a well-known resident of Nelson County. He had an easy manner and never met a stranger. Baby Ray had a passion for automobiles and his 1965 Ford Mustang was a source of pride to him and envy of others. Rhue Hollow Farm held a special place in his life and he enjoyed spending time in the fields as Susan tried to teach him about cows and farm life. His extended family included German Shepherds, geese, chickens, and even a pet cow. Baby Ray loved to work. He spent over thirty years at the Virginia Department of Transportation as a heavy equipment operator. Over the years, he ran several of his own businesses, including firewood, logging, and hauling. He truly loved excavation, and believed there was no job too difficult to tackle. Baby Ray did not necessarily work for the money but worked because he loved helping people. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24, 2017, in Beech Grove Cemetery by Pastor Rob Mansfield. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home. A special thanks to everyone who loved Baby Ray and who was able to stop by and share old memories of work and joyful times. They added so much to his happiness as he came to the end of his journey.
