There will be a prayer service Thursday at 5:00 pm with visitation from 4:00-5:00 pm at the funeral home. Raymond “Ray” was born April 13, 1939 to Sam and Maggie (Faul) Bauer at Harvey, ND. He graduated from McClusky High School in McClusky, ND with the class of 1957. In 1958, work brought Ray to Ashley, working road construction. Later, working at Piggly Wiggly. Ray was united in marriage to Shirley Sackmann on June 29, 1959 at Ashley, ND. He then worked at Bertsch Hardware before becoming employed at the ASCS office in 1961 until his retirement after 33 years with the U.S. Government in 1994. He then helped his father-in-law, Andy Sackmann with farming. Ray did this for several years, enjoying every day at the farm. Ray loved sports, especially enjoyed watching and following Ashley youth sports. He was a lifelong Cubs fan! He spent many years in league bowling with his special friends and liked to hunt and was an avid golfer. Even though after surgeries, he was limited to chipping and putting with his One O’clock afternoon buddies. When Ray wasn’t active outside, he could be found doing something else he loved, Puzzles. Ray and Shirley loved to square dance and shared the dance floor for many years together. Family was very important to him. His grandchildren were the joy of his life and his great-grandchildren were his gems. Ray was a good God loving man. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was a former Church council member, Sunday school teacher, Bible school teacher and choir member. Ray was also a member of Ashley Country Club. Grateful for having shared Ray’s life are his wife of 60 years, Shirley; daughters, Deborah (Glen) Shipman of Bismarck and Georgia (John) Kretschmar of Pierz, MN; granddaughter and great-grandchildren, Holly (Derek) Weigland and Colton, Elaina and Christian and grandson, Andy Kretschmar. Preceding Ray in death were his parents, brother, Morris Bauer and sister, Shirley Bauer. Honorary Urn-bearers will be Ray’s Morning Coffee Gang and the One O’clock Golf Crew. Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.
