Raymond Kornkven March 01, 1920 - December 14, 2018 Ray Kornkven, age 98 of Bottineau. died Friday, December 14, 2018 at a Bottineau hospital. His funeral will be held on Thursday December 20th at 11:00 am at the Grace Lutheran Brethren Church in Bottineau. Visitation will be on Wednesday beginning at 1:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Nero Funeral Home in Bottineau. Ray was born on March 1, 1920 on a farm north of Souris, North Dakota. Ray was one of eleven children of Norwegian immigrant parents, Iver and Hannah Kornkven, and he had great pride in that heritage. Ray attended a rural one-room elementary school and graduated from Souris High School in 1938. After high school, he began his farming career. On December 24, 1944, he married the love of his life, Junet (Jo) Berge. They were soon to celebrate 74 years of marriage. Ray and Jo were a testament of one of the greatest of loves to all who knew them. Ray and Jo moved to Bottineau in 1952. This move changed the course of their lives as he started his construction business with his brothers and later his sons, often doing business with a handshake. Ray continued to farm, and also had interests in Newberger's Lumberyard, State Bank of Bottineau, and R & R Properties (multiple family housing). Raymond Kornkven passed away peacefully into the arms of Jesus on Friday, December 14, 2018 at the age of 98. Ray and Jo were blessed with four children, Joleen (Roger) Feldner, Robert (Colleen) Kornkven, Richard (Karna) Kornkven, and Karen (Len) Smith. Later they would welcome 11 grandchildren, Brad (Laura) Feldner, Shawn Feldner, Angela (Brian) Volk, Mark (Angela) Kornkven, Elizabeth (Louis) Armstrong, Thomas (Molly) Kornkven, Michael Kornkven, Andrea (Austin) Hansen, Danielle (Drew) Mahar, Lucas (Stephanie) Shogren, Zachary (Anna) Shogren, and 17 (soon to be 18) great grandchildren into his family. Ray was proud of them all and they were equally as proud to be a part of his legacy. Ray enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, golfing, and skiing, as well as their many years at Lake Metigoshe. Ray’s life was measured in his faith in his Lord and Savior, and his deep love for his wife, family, extended family and friends. He has impacted each of us, and will be missed each and every day. A day that I have been dreading for a long time. The call that would shatter my heart and yet would cause me to equally rejoice in thanksgiving. The man who, to me, walked on water was called home yesterday into the arms of Jesus. The image and sounds from my dreams last night were so vivid as I watched this precious man walk towards a golden bright light, with his signature gait and strength, hearing the words we should all want to hear at the end of the road, “Well done my good and faithful servant.” How do you honor a man that knew no bounds in showing love to all of mankind? How do you honor a man that lived so humbly that he had the ability to give so generously? How do you honor a man that woke with the sun and worked until his hands showed his labor? How do you honor a man who loved his wife perfectly and completely for 74 years? How do you honor a man that brought such joy, laughter, and a lifetime of memories? How do you honor a man that showed more grace, integrity, and character in all things? How do you honor a man that set the standard and raised the bar? How do you honor a man that loved the Lord above all else? I don’t fully have the answer to any of these questions besides getting up every single day and strive to be more like my Grandpa Ray. With every twist and turn that my life would take it was he and my grandma that were the constant. Steady as the sun. Two of the most perfect people who hold the most tender parts of my heart. Moments together were cherished. Every word spoken and story told I leaned in to listen. I would start singing a hymn knowing that as soon as he heard a few notes that he would join in and I would take in the glory of Jesus through the words of my grandpa. He had the best laugh. He was loved by his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His name frequently chosen among us as the namesake. Grandpa Ray and Raegan Jo were quite the pair. It was in his company that I felt “home.” My heart hurts as much as it feels joy. Joy that at 98 years young he was able to live a full and healthy life with dignity, independence, and respect from all who knew him. Hurt for my Grandma Jo who for the first time went to bed without her husband beside her. When people talk about The Notebook love story I smile...it doesn’t even hold a candle to the real life love story that I have witnessed my entire life of Grandpa Ray and Grandma Jo. There are no words to express my gratitude for this man and his impact on my life. Grandpa, we celebrate a life well lived and well loved. Thank you for every single moment that you have given me to cherish. Thank you for leaving your legacy that has passed down through the generations. Thank you for being the firm foundation. You are one in a billion and it is you that I strive to be. Until we meet again my precious Grandpa Ray...
