Funeral Services for Ray will be held on Monday, December 18, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake with Rev. Harold Ovre officiating. Burial will be in the Devils Lake Cemetery. Serving as Casket Bearers for Ray will be nephews, Joe McDaniel and Herman Johnson; grand nephews, Jim McDaniel and Bruce McDaniel; friends and neighbors, Steve Johnson and Kip Svidal. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Ray's many friends of the Devils Lake community. Ray was born on January 9, 1920, in Juanita, ND to James and Fern (Brock) McDaniel. He lived in the Foster County area until 1959. Ray married Hyllis Johnson, his high school sweetheart, in Portland, Oregon on February 19, 1943. After their return to North Dakota in 1947, Ray got his teaching degree at Valley City State College. He was a teacher in Grace City, ND for three years prior to moving to Devils Lake where he taught World History at Devils Lake Central until his retirement in 1981. He was among the first group to be inducted into the Devils Lake Teachers Hall of Fame. His love for kids, his sense of humor, and that twinkle in his eye will be greatly missed. In addition to his career as a teacher, Ray spent many years as a crop hail adjuster. Ray was very active in St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Men's Club and the Devils Lake Community. He always kept current on the area high school activities, especially sports. Ray and Hyllis, his wife of 63 years, have two children; Scott (Ellen Cornwell) of Billings, Montana and Mary McDaniel of Seattle, Washington. Also surviving is his brother, Russ (June) McDaniel of Bismarck, ND and several beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; 8 brothers and 2 sisters.
