Read More	Ray Bunnell October 03, 1925 - April 28, 2011 Raymond R. “Ray” Bunnell, 85, passed away April 28, 2011, at his home in Ottumwa. Ray was born in Wapello County on Oct. 3, 1925, to Ralph and Mabel Hart Bunnell. He married Kathleen Murray on Sept. 23, 1950. Family members set up Mom and Dad on their first date. She preceded him in death March 25, 2005. Mom’s passing left a void in Dad’s life that was never filled. Dad retired after 33 years with the U.S. Postal Service, where we recently found out he was quite the prankster. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Spector, a minesweeper ship. Dad enjoyed fishing, bowling, camping, mushroom hunting, gardening and time spent with family and friends. Growing up, I can remember our family fishing trips — we would fish off many of the bridges in Southeast Iowa, trying to catch catfish. One vacation trip was to a resort that advertised outdoor entertainment. After a long trip to northern Iowa, we drove in to find a TV set up in a tree with rundown cabins. We made the long trip back home that evening only to start out the next day looking for a nicer resort. One of our excursions ended up with us staying in an old revamped chicken coop until one of the nicer cabins became available. Wonderful memories we have to hang on to. He was a member of St. Mary of the Visitation, O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion and Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Dad will be missed by his three daughters, Mary (Jerry) Andrews of Warsaw, Ill., Patty (Rich Marks) Bunnell and Sheila (Kenny) Jordan, all of Ottumwa; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Ruth (Jerry) Noel of Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Billy Ray Bunnell; a sister, Irene Hirlinger; and a brother, Ralph Edward Bunnell. His body has been cremated. Graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice, 927 E. Pennsylvania Ave., Ottumwa, Iowa 52501. Reece Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
