Father Paul A. Byrnes was celebrant and burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, where full military honors were accorded at the graveside by the combined veterans organizations. Serving as pallbearers were Buck Knott, John Mertz, John Wilson Jr., Milton Hart, Pete Broadwater and Russell Miller Jr. The Boal Funeral Home, Westernport, was in charge of arrangements. Born in Westernport 7 March 1928, he was the son of the late Harry T. and Nellie (Crable) Beckner. He was preceded in death by his wife, Veronica E. (Winner) Beckner in 1997. Mr. Beckner was a United States Marine Corps and Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He was retired from Westvaco Corporation with 45 years of service, having been a supervisor in the machine shop. He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Westernport, a member and Past Grand Knight of Piedmont Council 685, Knights of Columbus; a Past Faithful Navigator of Chief Justice Taney General Assembly; a member and Past Commander of Victory Post 155, American Legion, Westernport and Past Mountain District Commander of the American Legion. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Mount Lodge 40 and was an avid golfer. He is survived by three sons, Michael Beckner and wife Etta, Cumberland; Joseph Beckner and wife Margie, Lonaconing, Md., and Tom Beckner and wife Rhonda, Westernport; two daughters, Linda Davis-Kyle and husband Gene, Barton, Md., and Janet Morris and husband Jim, Westernport; one brother, Harry T. Beckner Jr. and wife Virginia, Rawlings, Md.; one sister, Shirley Duke, Tampa, Fla.; ten grandchildren, Jennifer Zais, Heather Beckner, James Likens, Al Beckner, Cassie Morris, Eric Morris, Megan Beckner, Josh Beckner, Luke Beckner and Aaron Beckner; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Brandon Zais; a special friend Betty Hunter, Frostburg, Md., and his special golfing buddies. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter's Church Capital Improvement Fund."
